In this monthly series, local realtor Andrea Schutter Riebeling does a Q & A with local business leaders about what inspires them. This month’s spotlight is on Round Top’s Morgan Tindall.

1) What is your business?

My business is a hair stylist and all things hair related.

2.) How did you get started?

How I got started was, I think, like most people in this field, doing my friends hair in high school. I was the one always styling and coloring her friend’s hair and just always really loved it. They were always asking me to do it even back then.

3.) How long have you been in business?

I have been in business going on two years now in Round Top.

4.) What kind of service’s do you provide at your place of work?

The kinds of services we offer are a pretty neat collection, actually. I’m the resident stylist, so I’m there more than anyone. I specialize in what I like to call a lived-in look. So beautiful livedin blondes, colored hair extensions and of course cuts. And don’t forget, with Valentine’s Day coming up, I do beautiful blowouts and styling for events as well. We’re a full-service salon with some pretty neat spa add-ons as well. Brooke and Molly are both the most talented stylists that I have the privilege of learning from. They’re both curly specialist with a teaching background. And then we have Emily who offers massages and facials. She owns a separate practice in Austin and is amazing to have around. We also have Jennifer who does Botox, injections and a plethora of other things. She has her full-time place in Brenham but lends her services to us on occasion. I’m even guilty of getting B-12 shots from her time to time.

5.) What is your background?

So my background is pretty full circle, I feel like. I went to college at Angelo State, then found myself working for an online marketing company in Austin before moving out here. After I had my son, I really wanted to do something that gave me control of my time, so I enrolled at Paul Mitchell, the school in Houston. I commuted for a little over a year until I graduated. While there, I made their Rising Stars and even into their top “Phase Two” program, which are both pretty competitive and selective. Once I finished I met Brooke at Lyric and the rest is, well, history.

6.) What do you suggest to others who want to venture out and take a leap of action in the future of their career?

If I could suggest to anyone wanting to venture out and take that leap in their future careers, I would say don’t over think it. Just go do it. There is not a guide book to life or your career but I can say if it’s something you can’t stop thinking about, then go for it. One of the best things I learned in school was failing is only a real failure if you don’t learn from it. Once you learn from it, it’s a lesson. And as we all know life is full of lessons but those lessons make us better. I know I’ve learned a lot of lessons but I’m grateful for every one of them.

7.) Do you believe in college, trade school, or any training?

Do I believe in college, trade school or any training well of course but I also think it depends on the type of career you’re after. We all hope our doctors went to school right? So that’s how I feel about certain types of fields. I wouldn’t trust just anyone to slather some chemicals on my hair or skin and hope they knew what they’re doing. It’s one of those things where knowledge is power. The more you can try and learn about your field or the more you try and work on your skills, they better you’ll be at them. Even Michael Jordan practiced.

8.) How did you decide to give the name to your business?

How I decided to name my business is ironic, I feel like. In school they let you come up with your name and mine was just simple. Morgan Tindall Hair and then when I started working out of Lyric Salon & Day Spa out of Round Top as an independent stylist, I just carried into that. So now it’s just Morgan Tindall Hair at Lyric Salon. Not everything needs to be complicated after all but that’s just me. We’re located in beautiful Henkel Square right by the best rose garden at 110 Schumann Lane in Round Top.

9.) What are some things you’ve learned through your business and your life?

Some things I’ve learned through my business and my life are pretty similar. Growth comes from those uncomfortable moments. And what I mean by that is we never go or grow anywhere if we live the same day on repeat and call it a life. Now I’m not saying consistency isn’t ideal but what I mean is sometimes going out and doing something that’s incredibly uncomfortable could have the greatest impact on making your life that much better. Starting that career, going back to school, quitting that job and finding yourself, it’s all about finding growth out of the things that make us uncomfortable. It’s funny because something you learn while doing color is to trust your process and for those who know this, sometimes watching that blonde toning process can be majorly uncomfortable. I tend to find myself watching this process and seeing it and I want to rinse early but I know I have to trust how uncomfortable it looks and know that I can trust my skills to know I formulated my outcome beautifully. It’s not always easy (and I’ve made my fair share of mistakes) but after that you have this amazing color.

10.) What makes you laugh?

Hmm, what makes me laugh? That’s a tough one. I’m that friend you can’t look at in a serious moment my face never lies, but I guess I have to say people. After being in many positions based around people, they just make me laugh. When you think you’ve seen and heard it all there’s always something new to get you laughing.
