FISD, SPAG Present the 2024 Student Art Show
Flatonia ISD Art Department will present a student artist reception for the Yammy Wammy 2024 Student Art Show at the Southern Produce Art Gallery on Monday March 18 in Flatonia. The reception will feature a variety of art by students grades Pre-K through 11. The event will also include live music by FISD band members and staff. Flatonia Elementary PTO will be providing snacks and refreshments. All of the public is invited to come.
This is the FISD Art Department’s second campuswide art show, but it is the first time that the department is collaborating with a local artist and gallery to display their art. One may wonder, “Why is this called the Yammy Wammy?” The art show title ‘Yammy Wammy’ was invented by 7th grade art student Logan Wilbanks. Her art instructor, Ms. Demel, one day asked the students to come up with some creative titles for the art show. “Mr. Siter, the gallery owner and artist at Southern Produce Art Gallery said we need a catchy name. I decided to leave that creative endeavor to the students. I am so glad that I did. I read Logan’s ideas and thought, ‘Yammy Wammy is perfect; it is catchy, and it is really funny to say.’ Try it. People will smile. Besides, a student art show should be filled with joy. Yammy Wammy definitely sounds joyful. I really thank Logan for coming up with such a creative title.”
YAM is also an acronym for Youth Art Month, which takes place every March. It is a time when people come together to celebrate youth art education across the States and Canada. The FISD Art Department and its students decided to celebrate YAM this year with a major art show featuring their favorite works of art created during the 20232024 school year.
Southern Produce Art Gallery (SPAG) had their own raw art opening back in March of 2023. Harry Siter, the gallery owner of SPAG, put together a marvelous collection of talent from artists near and far during that time. Harry himself is a professional sculptor specializing in sculpture and furniture mixtures of cast metals and milled wood. He has plans to include a foundry at SPAG one day. The art students of FISD are incredibly grateful that SPAG is offering them such a gorgeous venue to display their art during YAM.
If you would like to check out all the talent, the art show will officially open on Saturday March 9, staying up for approximately three weeks. Besides the student artist reception on March 18, viewing is also available during normal gallery hours, Friday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., or by appointment.
