Firefighters Have to Leave Their Own Fundraiser to Fight a Fire
The Schulenburg Volunteer Fire Department served more than 1,700 plates of delicious beef stew at their annual Firemen’s Benefit Supper in Schulenburg on Thursday.
It took 13 kettles to cook the 1,850 lbs. of mean. If you do the math, that amounts to a healthy portion, not to mention the buttered potatoes and green beans that came with the plates.
The Schulenburg firefighters spent the better part of two days preparing the meal at the Schulenburg KC Hall. Some of them had to swap their aprons for fire suits on Thursday when a call came over their radios.
A man who was welding on a metal fence few miles north of town on US 77 called it in after accidentally sparking a small grass fire. Firefighters arrived and quickly extinguished the flames. They returned to the KC Hall just in time to serve the meal.
Schulenburg Fire Chief Darren Guentert reminds everyone that the burn ban is still in effect. He urges everyone to be very careful with any activity outside that could spark a fire.
