Fayetteville Has Stunning New Mural
Stop by and check out the recently completed 7’x 24’ mural on the side of the Fayetteville store. Local artist Susan Grooms skillfully depicted the rich history and culture of Fayetteville. “It’s a great example of how organizations can work together to offer something beneficial to our town. ARTS and the Economic Development Corporation aligned to make this very special rendition of our town possible,“ stated Mayor Mike Stroup.
Fayetteville store manager Sunil Mazar stated, “When I sent the artist’s proof of the artwork to the store owner, they approved it within seconds and said they loved it. I’m very excited the Fayetteville store was selected.”
City Council
Following the chemical spill on Hwy. 71 last Sunday, Mayor Stroup sent a letter to the County Emergency Management Office pointing out the lack of communication about the rerouting of traffic through Fayetteville. In the paper last week, Stroup stated that no one from the County notified any Fayetteville officials about the detour until late Monday morning.
In the last City Council meeting, City Council member Kelly Brooks was unanimously approved as Mayor Pro Tem. The Mayor Pro Tem serves as a temporary or acting mayor in the absence or incapacity of the elected mayor.
A budget review meeting is set for June 7 in the City offices. It is open to the public.
City Secretary Sandee Wilkinson and Mayor Stroup attended the Texas Municipal League Budget and Tax Workshop seminar on May 23 in Bastrop.
The Utility Building Ordinance will be edited for clarity regarding the monthly sewage adjustment.
Getting Together
Judy Garman Kurtz held the annual Garman sisters retreat in Fayetteville over the Memorial Day weekend. Sisters Lucy (from El Dorado, Alaska), Beth and Rhonda (Dahlonega, GA) traveled to Fayetteville to see family, enjoy games, singing, eating and mingling through the Vintage Rose.
Song Swap
Come enjoy another Song Swap this Sunday, June 2 at ARTS from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mike Stroup will be joined on stage by Robert Herridge, a musician whose career began when he was just 16 years old/ Herridge played bass with Johnny Lee and the Road Runners in the late 1960s. In the 1970s, he joined the Bayou City Beats and became known as the “little fiddler” at Gilley’s. A self-taught musician, Herridge studied classical violin to improve his craft. As they say, the rest is history. Admission is free and light refreshments are provided.
Church News
St. Paul Lutheran holds services on Sundays at 10:30 a.m. Services are recorded every week, rotating among four Shared Lutheran Ministry churches and posted on the Facebook page for the Shared Lutheran Ministry of Fayette County. Services are also featured on KTIM 89.1 Sundays at noon.
St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Fayetteville holds Mass Saturdays at 6 p.m., and Sunday’s at 10 a.m.
St. Mary Catholic Church in Ellinger holds Mass on Saturdays at 4 p.m. and Sunday’s at 8 a.m.
Worship services at Fayetteville Brethren are held on the second, third and fourth Saturday of every month at 10 a.m. An adult Bible Study is held before the worship service from 9 to 9:45 a.m.
Memorial Day
American Legion Post 602 hosted their annual Memorial Day Observance in the square in honor of all veterans who have given their lives in support of our country. The celebrated event featured an honor salute by the Shelby Post Rifle team and music by Mike Stroup, Annie Rost and Alvin Minarcik. The poem, “The Flag,” was read by Paula Urban and Judge Dan Mueller said a few words.
