Fayette County Retired Teachers Meet
Members of the Fayette County TRTA met on Nov. 14. Refreshments for the fellowship time were provided by Marceil Prestridge, Linda Oltmann, and Susan Vecera. Pledges to the flags were led by Lisa Slinkard.
The business meeting began with the approval of the Sept.minutes. No Treasurer’s Report: President Slinkard stated that our unit is in dire need of an Interim Treasurer, and asked all present to consider filling this position.
Children’s Book Project: Chair Melanie Mica said that we are close to our yearly target amount for giving money to a group for purchasing books. A motion was made for us to take the amount of funds needed from the treasury, for the target amount. Passed unanimously; Melanie said that she knows of a couple of places that can use the books, and will contact them.
Community Service: These volunteer hours include all volunteer tasks that are done without payment. Hours are those completed Jan. 1-Dec. 31, Jan. 15, 2023, is the deadline for hours submitted. They can be emailed to Joan Miertschin by Dec. 31, or given to her at the Jan. 9, 2023, TRTA Meeting.
Kathy Koch distributed “Healthy Living News” which included information on “How to Say No,” on Shingles, and a recipe for low-cal cobbler.
Kim Joost, Information and Protective Services, sent in Nov. via the group email, information on “Charity Scams.” Legislative: President Slinkard pointed out for all to read the last two pages of THE VOICE, as they include the WEP situation, and the progress on our Cost of Living Adjustment. April 11 and 12, 2023, are the dates to remember for the TRTA State Convention in Austin. TRTA Foundation: Melanie Mica explained the importance of today’s silent auction. It benefits the Foundation, which supplies financial aid to active teachers and retired teachers.
New Business: New Standing Rules - copies of the revised (as suggested by the District 13 Rules Committee) were made available to those present. The new rules are basically changes in wording for better clarification/ understanding.
Fayette County will vote on the rules at the Jan. 9, 2023 meeting.
“Goodie Baskets for Fayette County Teachers”: ALL Fayette County schools will receive these; members were reminded to bring snack-sized items to the January 9 meeting.
Silent Auction: At the conclusion of the business meeting, members were given 10 minutes to peruse the silent auction items, and to add names/amounts to the items.
A drawing was held for Retention Members: Linda Oltmann won the $5 local dues paid.
The next meeting will be on Monday, Jan. 9, 2023, at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall (1215 Von Minden, La Grange); social time is 1:30 p.m. with the business meeting at 2 p.m. Fred Weisser will speak on Pre-Need/Funeral Planning, Goodie Baskets for area teachers will be filled, and nominations for officers will be held.
