A group of concerned citizens from Fayette County joined hundreds of other Texans at the Capitol on Saturday to advocate for public schools and teacher raises.

People came from all parts of Texas including urban, suburban and rural areas. There were: students, parents and grandparents; teachers, librarians, superintendents, and school board members; Democrats, Republicans and Independents all who care deeply about quality education for all of our children.

Speakers, messages and posters told the story of how critical our local public schools are to the future of our communities, our State and our Country ... indeed, ”Public Schools are the heart of our community!”

The event was organized by nonpartisan groups who are very concerned about the special session called by the Governor which prioritizes vouchers—sometimes referred to as “school choice” or “savings accounts” – a plan that would use taxpayer dollars to fund private, forprofit and religious schools.

There is nothing on the special session agenda about funding for public schools or for teacher raises.

Rally attendees and all Texans who believe All Texas children deserve a quality education are encouraged to: contact your elected officials and let them know where you stand on these issues both during the next 30 days of the special session which beganMonday, Oct. 9, and in the longer term by voting for candidates who support our Texas public schools.
