Fayette Co. Retired Teachers Attend Day at the Capitol

April 12 was “Day at the Capitol” for all Texas retired teachers; approximately 175 from District 13 (14 counties surrounding Fayette) were in attendance, and the following were from Fayette County: Lisa Slinkard, Melanie Mica, Chris Morrison, Sandra Aschenbeck, Debbie Morrill, Jeanne Wetjen, Kathy Migl, and Karen Fitch.

The day began with arrival on the East Lawn, where members were greeted and all received a tote, Day at the Capitol materials, and a bottle of water. As visits to our legislators had been done recently, all proceeded to the House Gallery to hear the resolution honoring TRS Retirees. All retirees were encouraged to wear red for the day; the House was filled with red – no vacant seats. After all headed to the East Lawn to enjoy an old-fashioned ice cream social, hosted and served by Amy’s Ice Cream. Bowls of ice cream were chosen from Mexican Vanilla, Belgium Chocolate, Strawberry, and Mango, and were completed with a choice of 4 toppings. A tent was set up with chairs for all, and live entertainment with country/western music completed the afternoon.

The next Fayette County Retired Teachers’meeting will be on May 8, at the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall, 1215 Von Minden, La Grange. It will be a Fellowship Gathering, with a Recipe Swap and Testing.

Other dates to remember: Thursday, May 11-District 13 Conference in Kyle; Monday, June 12, last Fayette County meeting of the spring.

All retired public school employees are welcome to attend these meetings, even if retired from another city, county, or state.
