Fayette Appears in NBC Nightly News Segment
NBC Nightly News aired a segment Monday night, Dec. 19, about the scarcity of electric vehicle charging stations in the nation, and Fayette County appeared in the broadcast.
Jacob Ward of NBC News set out on a trip between Houston and Austin. He stopped midway in La Grange to charge his Chevy Volt. Ward found the charging stations outside the Domino’s Pizza in La Grange, but none of the charging stations worked.
Ward located another charging station at the Recycling the Past and Round Top Ballroom antiques venue on FM 1291 near Warrenton. Ward spoke with Matt White, owner of the venue, and asked him why it’s so hard to find charging stations in this part of Texas.
“Possibly because it’s a heavy oil state, I don’t know,” White said. “People like combustible engines.”
Ward got back on the road and made it to Austin at the end of the segment.
“We just barely made it here,” Ward said. “That’s the story of driving (electric vehicles) long distances across so much of America.
There are few charging stations on Highway 71, but there are many more on Interstate 10. In Fayette County, drivers of electric vehicles can charge at Amigo’s Travel Center in Flatonia.
