Events Set for Texas Heroes Day in LG This Saturday

Commemorations for Texas Heroes Day will take place at various venues throughout La Grange on Saturday, September 16. Though rooted in reunions hosted on Monument Hill since 1848, Texas Heroes Day was officially established as a Texas Honor Day in 2012 by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas. Today, many organizations honor the past and present service of Texans in the military during Texas Heroes Day events hosted throughout the state.

In La Grange, Monument Hill State Historic Site will host its annual Monument Hill Remembrance Ceremony at 10 a.m. This ceremony honors the Republic of Texas soldiers killed in the Dawson and Mier Expeditions who are entombed on Monument Hill. This year’s ceremony will feature special remarks from Fayette County Judge Dan Mueller, as well as the wreath-laying ceremony and gun salute led by costumed reenactors. Presidents of the Monument Hill Chapters of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and the Sons of the Republic of Texas will also offer remarks.

Seating for the ceremony may be limited. Personal lawn chairs are welcomed and encouraged. Admission fees are waived for ceremony attendees. The remembrance ceremony will be streamed on Facebook for those unable to attend in person.

The Fayette County Historical Commission will sponsor a special tour of the courthouse square in La Grange. Interested individuals should meet at 11:30 a.m. at Founders Park near 246 W Colorado Street. The program, led by history major Amanda Urban and members of the County Historical Commission, will feature the interpretive panels at Founders Park, the Muster Oak, the Courthouse Dawson Memorial, and other stops related to the county’s history.

Texas Heroes Museum Manger Charles Murray will lead special tours about Texas heroes, particularly those well remembered in Fayette County, at 2 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. The Texas Heroes Museum is also open for self-guided exploration this weekend: 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday and 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Other local historical attractions, including those that preserve and share state and county military history, will be open this weekend. The Fayette Heritage Museum is open Friday, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. The Historic N.W. Faison House is open Saturday, noon - 4 p.m. Both offer self-guided opportunities to explore exhibits and historic resources.
