La Grange only had two days this month with high temperatures under 100 degrees. That kind of heat can kill a person.

“We’ve seen an increase in heat related emergencies such as dehydration and heat exhaustion,” said Fayette County EMS Director Josh Vandever. “Luckily, we’ve avoided a lot of heat stroke. It seems like people are taking care of themselves before it gets to that point.”

Vandever urged citizens to carry water with them and to stay hydrated when outside.

“The best thing someone can do for themselves is be hydrated,” Vandever said. “Hydration is such a huge thing with helping your body manage that. Take electrolytes and eat a healthy diet with plenty of vegetables. All of that naturally equips your body to help it cope.”

Vandever said sports drinks such as Gatorade and Powerade provide a good source of electrolytes.

“Some sports drinks are loaded with sugar,” he said. “Getting the zero sugar sports drinks helps.”
