Early Voting Brisk in Round Top, Schulenburg

Municipal elections take place this Saturday, May 6, in La Grange, Schulenburg, Flatonia and Round Top.

Polls will be open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday at La Grange City Hall, the Schulenburg Public Library, Flatonia City hall and Round Top Courthouse. Early voting ended Tuesday, May 2. The early voting numbers may indicate the level of public interest in some of those races.

The Town of Round Top boasts the highest voter turnout so far. As of Wednesday, 32 of the 88 registered voters in tiny Round Top have voted early. That’s more than 36 percent voter turnout. Three at-large seats are up for election on the Round Top Town Council, and five candidates are running: Amy Bone (incumbent), Jeanette Burger, Karen Duddlesten, Cameron LePee and Judith Vincent.

The City of La Grange will hold an election for a Council seat representing Ward 4. Incumbent Arthur Bosque faces former councilman Chris Jernigan in that election. Only 34 of the 584 registered voters have voted early – a turnout of about 5.8 percent so far.

The City of Schulenburg will hold elections for Mayor and two seats on the Council. According to the Fayette County Elections Office, 152 people voted early. That amounts to about 9.6 percent of registered voters. The City of Schulenburg will hold three contested elections. Four people are running for Mayor: Elaine Kocian (incumbent), Jake Berger, Connie Koop mann and Robert “Armen” Herzik. Two candidates are facing off for Place 2 on the City Council: Frank “Butch” Wick III and Tina Bohlmann. And there is a special election to fill an unexpired term for Place 3 with Scott Stoner facing Douglas Behlen.

Schulenburg I.S.D. will hold an election for three seats on the school board, and 236 people voted early. That amounts to about 6.8 percent of registered voters in the district. There are five candidates running for those seats: Jarrod “Buck” Schramek (incumbent), Troy Brenek, Hale Hentges, Daniel Deagan and Andrew Rorschach.

The City of Flatonia will hold an election to fill three atlarge seats on the City Council. Eighty-one people voted early, which amounts to about 10.2 percent of registered voters. The four candidates running for those seats are Travis Seale, Ginny Sears, Donna Cockrell and Pamela Stolarski.
