DPS Misstates Fatal Crash Victim’s Home Town in April 2 Wreck

In last Friday’s story about the double-fatality wreck from April 2 on US 77 south of Schulenburg, the Texas Department of Public Safety incorrectly reported that one of the deceased drivers was from Yoakum.

A family member called the Record this week and said that Daniel Joe Elizondo, 67, actually lived in Weimar. Elizondo’s wife, 64-year-old Sandra Dee DeLeon, was in the vehicle and survived the wreck with serious injuries. She is also from Weimar. The family member said that DeLeon remains hospitalized on life support.

Elizondo died after another vehicle driven by 54-yearold Ruben Perez Jr. of Hallettsville crossed the centerline and struck Elizondo’s pickup. Perez also died in the crash.

Elizondo’s funeral took place on Tuesday, April 14, at St. Michael Catholic Church in Weimar.
