The new office space and public restrooms have been completed at Founders Park on the square in downtown La Grange, but officials have yet to work out the details on when the restrooms will be open.

Fayette County owns the pocket park, which is located next to the County Clerk’s office at 252 West Colorado St. At the Commissioners Court meeting last Wednesday, Nov. 23, the County signed a lease with the Fayette County Historical Commission for some of the new office space in the park. During the discussion, County Clerk Brenda Fietsam asked who would be responsible for opening the gates to the park so the public could use the restrooms.

Courthouse maintenance staff currently opens the gates and closes them during Courthouse business hours. But the restrooms are needed the most during after-hours events on the Square and on weekends, when the Courthouse is closed. Before the recent renovations, the County had an agreement with the City of La Grange to water the plants inside Founders Park, but the County decided to remove all of the greenery inside the park during the renovations.

The Commissioners have discussed forming an agreement with the City of La Grange to open the gates on the weekends. But no agreement has been formed so far.

“That’s something we’ve got to work on,” said County Judge Joe Weber.
