There is no Lamborghini dealership coming to La Grange, despite rumors to the contrary.
The gossip began last week after Pharm House Drug Store closed at the corner of Travis St. and Jefferson St. in downtown La Grange. Michael Schlabach, the Ellinger taxidermist who’s wellknown for spinning a yarn, suggested on Facebook that the drug store closed to make way for a Lamborghini dealership.
He followed that up two days later with a “confirmation” post including a La Grange Lamborghini “coming soon” sign and a congratulatory note suggesting that local car salesman Chip Wied was behind the venture.
The rumor took off like wildfire on the Fayette County News Facebook page with Schlabach and his band of pranksters fanning the flames.
“Regarding Pharm House closing and Lamborghini moving in, I did some digging,” said one of the page members. “My son works in the high performance luxury and Formula 1 industry in Austin. He did some digging too. Nobody in the area has heard anything about a new Lamborghini dealership anywhere in the state, so their consensus is that if it’s true, it’s got to be a reseller.”
“We can’t get a decent restaurant that has decent home cooked meals - but we can get a Lamborghini dealership?” asked another.
La Grange Window Tint got in on the joke, saying they tint windows on everything from Lambos to fire trucks.
Schlabach called the Record on Thursday and said the joke may have gone too far. He said a young man told him that he heard La Grange I.S.D. was going to change its mascot from the Leopards to the Lambos as part of a marketing scheme with the luxury auto manufacturer.
Schlabach said he tried explaining to the young man that it was all a joke, but the youngster didn’t believe him.
“There is not a Lamborghini dealership coming to La Grange,” Schlabach said.
