Dawn Orsak, authoring a book of Texas Czech foods was the guest speaker at the Fayette County Czech Heritage Society meeting.
The Fayette County Czech Heritage Society met on Sunday, Feb. 4, in the Hanslik Hall of the TCHCC in La Grange to celebrate their annual soup (polévka) social. An abundance of soups including chicken noodle, tortilla, potato, sauerkraut with sausage, vegetable beef soup and chili were enjoyed by those who joined.
The guest speaker was Dawn Orsak who is writing a cookbook about the foods Texas Czechs have been eating since immigrating to Texas. She is currently collecting recipes and photos of food preparation. Her book will focus on foods prepared in the home, served at community events, and sold commercially.
The election of officers for the 2024 year was held. Retta Slavik Chandler performed the installation.
Carolyn Heinsohn reported that all Fayette County schools have received CHS scholarship information. Two $500 Fayette CHS and one $1,000 CHS of Texas scholarships are available for graduating seniors.
Members celebrating February birthdays were Marilyn Cernoch, John Eilert, and Zander Woodworth.
The next CHS event will be the letní piknik (summer picnic) on June 11.
