Cyclist Hit in the Dark Near LG HEB

A La Grange man suffered minor injuries after getting hit on his bicycle near H-E-B Monday evening, October 17. According to a report from the La Grange Police Department, the crash happened around 9:51 p.m.The report said 47-yearold Eric Kollaja of La Grange was on his bicycle northbound on S. Monroe St. at the intersection of E. Travis St. The report said Kollaja was at the stop sign and failed to yield the right-of-way. He attempted to cross Travis St. and was struck by white 2004 Ford van. Police said the driver of the van, 83-year-old Chester Fortner of Oklahoma, was an antiques dealer who was in town for the FallAntiques Show in RoundTop and Warrenton.

The crash threw Kollaja off his bicycle. The report said he suffered minor scratches, bumps and bruises. Fayette County EMS responded. Kollaja declined transport to the hospital, the report said.

The van suffered minor damage including a broken turn signal and cracked windshield. Fortner was able to drive it away from the scene.

La Grange Patrolman John Wostarek investigated the accident. He issued Kollaja citations for failure to yield the right-ofway and for not having the required lighting equipment on his bicycle.
