County Chooses Artificial For 2022 Xmas Tree
Fayette County crews set up Christmas decorations on the Courthouse Square this week and folks might notice something different this year – no Christmas tree.
For just about as far back as anyone can remember, the County has set up a cedar Christmas tree on the Courthouse lawn.
The four County Commissioners would take turns each year selecting a cedar tree growing somewhere in the County, cutting it down and setting it up on the lawn.
This year it was Pct. 4 Commissioner Drew Brossmann’s turn. Brossmann decided instead to install a lighting display that resembles a tree.
“This year, with the drought, if the cedar trees were in the pasture with cows, they didn’t look good,” Brossmann said. “We’ve been talking about getting something permanent for the last few years. It takes a lot of man hours and time to get the tree up there.”
Brossmann said he believes the lighting display will look much better at night than the trees of years past.
“I think in the long run it will look better, last longer and work better for the county,” Brossmann added.
Brossmann said he would like to see a more impressive lighting display on the Courthouse grounds for Christmas season. Lavaca County puts on a spectacular lighting display on their Courthouse Square in Hallettsville every Christmas season. Brossmann said he hopes Fayette County can do more to light up the Square in future years.
“I think we can do better with lighting,” Brossmann said. “Maybe this is a first step to make it happen.”
The new “tree” will be lit for the first time on Thursday evening, Dec. 1, during the Schmeckenfest celebration in Downtown La Grange.
