County Action Urged for a Historic Marker at Round Top Courthouse

Deborah Koenig, a member of the Round Top Do Your Duty Club (DYD), addressed the Fayette County Commissioners Court on Feb. 26 about a historical marker for the Round Top Precinct Courthouse.

“This effort was started last year by Mr. Mark Neely and Mr. Barry Bone,” Koenig said. “The commissioner’s court heard the presentation and request for the historical marker in February last year, 2025. The request was approved by the commissioners court.”

Since then, Koenig said the DYD has been assisting with the effort. Koenig said the DYD has been working with the Fayette County Historical Commission to obtain a historical marker for the building.

“March 1st is when the Historical Commission portal is open for receiving applications,” Koenig said. “One of the documents required is a property owner authorization form. I forwarded this form … to be presented to Judge Mueller for his signature.”

Koenig said she has not received any response from the County.

“I am asking honorable Judge Mueller to please sign the property owner authorization form,” Koenig said. “In my own research about Round Top and the courthouse, I ran across a narrative, written about a group of rowdies in 1865, who camped outside town below Cummins Creek. These rowdies would ride in Round Top and shoot up the town. Request for relief at the county level fell on deaf ears. So the local merchants took their concerns to the state legislature. Please don’t let history repeat itself on my request, only on deaf ears.”

Koenig delivered her remarks during the public comment period at last week’s meeting. There was no item on the meeting agenda regarding this matter.

Accordingly, the court could not take any action on her request at that time.
