City Moves to Condemn Plastics Plant

City Moves to Condemn Plastics Plant

The La Grange City Council voted unanimously Monday night to begin condemnation proceedings against the old La Grange Plastics property at 915 E. Colorado St.

The building on the property burned in a fire on Jan. 22, leaving a massive pile of rubble. The owner has not yet cleaned up the property.

“We want to get voluntary compliance with our rules and ordinances,” City Manager Fred Bell said after the meeting Monday night. “Once its gone beyond that, and we’re not getting cooperation, we can file with the court to condemn the property in the interest of public safety.”

However, Bell said he was recently informed that the owner is working with a potential purchaser to buy the property and remove the debris.

“We are past kicking the can and we’re not kicking the can any more,” Bell said. “We need it cleaned up. So we authorized the City Attorney to get the paperwork ready. Then all of a sudden, there is now supposedly a buyer for it.
