Church Picnic Season About to Hit High Gear

A favorite time of year is almost here for connoisseurs of fried chicken, polka music and zima pivo (Czech for “cold beer”). The first church picnic of the year in this area, St. Michael’s Spring Festival in Weimar, takes place this Sunday,April 30. The Hostyn Mayfest follows next Sunday, May 7.

Here’s a list of church picnics taking place around Fayette County and the surrounding area throughout the summer. Some picnics have not yet finalized details, but we included information currently available.

Sunday, April 30

St. Michael Spring Festival at Weimar Veterans’ Memorial Park (503 Park Dr, Weimar, TX 78962)

Fried chicken and sausage dinner starting at 11 a.m. Plates $12. Auction at 1 p.m. Bingo 2-6 p.m. Kids games, antique and classic car show, country store, cake walk, treasure chest, mechanical bull. Bounce house 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Music by Czechaholics, Chris Rybak and Texas Sundown Band.

Sunday, May 7

Mayfest at Queen of the Holy Rosary Church in Hostyn (936 FM 2436, La Grange, TX 78945)

Polka Mass at 10 a.m. outdoors under the tent. BBQ Pork and Sausage Dinner from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Plates $14. Auction at 1 p.m. Bingo 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Music throughout the day by Texas Sound Check and the Czechaholics.

Sunday, May 21

Waldek Lutheran Church Picnic (6915 Waldeck Church Ln, Ledbetter, TX 78946)

Barbecue pork steak meal with green beans, potatoes and sauce for $15 a plate, serving from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. dine in or take out. Raffle announced at 12:30 a.m. Bounce house, country store, face painting, homemade ice cream and cake walk.

Sacred Heart Spring Picnic (Hallettsville KC Hall - 321 US77 South, Hallettsville, TX 77964)

Fried chicken and stew dinner 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Plates for $12. Auction at 1 p.m. Cake walk, country store, games and more. Bingo noon to 6 p.m. Washer pitching tournament at 5 p.m. Music by Kovanda Czech Band, Texas Sound Check and the Red Ravens

Shiner’s famous three-meat plates (fried chicken, picnic stew and country sausage) served from 10:30 a.m.-2 p.m. for $13. Drive-through plates to go for $15. Music in the air-conditioned hall by Rusty Steins from 11 a.m.-2 p.m., The Shiner Hobo Band from 2-4 p.m., and Mark Halata and Texavia from 4-7 p.m. Music outside by Das Ist Lustig from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., 10-yearold rising star Michael Dutka from 12:30-2 p.m., Blue Denim from 2-4 p.m., Stephanie Ross and The Southern Drive Band from 4:30-7 p.m. Chris Rybak Band from 7-10:30 p.m. Dance at night by The Emotions from 9 p.m.-midnight. Serbin Homecoming Picnic (1011 Co Rd 212, Giddings, TX 78942)

Barbecue beef, pork and chicken sold by the pound starting at 9 a.m. Trimmings including potato salad, beans, noodles and pastries of all kinds will be sold by Ladies Aid. Youth league hamburger stand open from 4-7:30 p.m. Baseball game between the Shiner Clippers and Serbin Jackrabbits starts at 2 p.m. Children’s program at 2 p.m. Children booths and games also start at 2 p.m. Barrel train rides for the kids starting at 2:30 p.m. Entertainment by Czech Melody Masters from 2-8 p.m. The Texas Wendish Heritage Museum will be open from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
