Car Hits Train In Winchester

Crossing Identified as Dangerous Two Years Ago, But Changes Yet to Begin

One person suffered injuries in a crash involving a vehicle and a train in Winchester on Sunday, June 28.

According to a report from Union Pacific Railroad, (UP) the crash happened around 8:30 p.m. at the Zilss Rd. crossing in Winchester. The report said a vehicle collided with a UP train. The vehicle was a 2014 Ford Fusion.

Fayette County EMS responded and found a male patient in his late 20s with significant injuries. Assistant EMS Director Gary Daniels said the patient was flown by helicopter to Dell Seton Hospital.

The train continued on its way around 11 p.m. Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) investigated the crash. The DPS crash report was not available in time for this publication.

Fayette County Pct. 1 Commissioner Jason McBroom petitioned the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) several years ago to improve the Zilss Rd. crossing. In 2024, TxDOT identified the crossing as a particularly dangerous one that needs improvement. At that time they agreed to install the improvements at no cost to the County. However, the work has not yet taken place.

McBroom reported this week that TxDOT completed plans for the crossing and sent them to UP for review.
