Burn Gets Out of Control in Ledbetter
Ledbetter Volunteer Fire Department put out a small fire that got out of control Tuesday morning, Sept. 27. The call came in around 10:30 a.m. A property owner on FM 1291 in the Ledbetter area was burning a pile of old wooden fence posts. The fire spread to surrounding grass and brush. Ledbetter VFD responded with two grass trucks, a tanker, a tanker and five firefighters. They quickly put out the flames.
Fayette County Commissioners lifted the burn ban on Sept. 8, but they voted to put the ban back in place last Thursday, Sept. 22, after just two weeks. The property owner told the Record that he was not aware the burn ban was back in place.
Firemen’s Feast Next Weekend
In related news, Ledbetter Fire Chief Kevin Woelfel invited the public celebrate the department’s 75th anniversary at the Annual Ledbetter Firemen’s Feast next Saturday, Oct. 8. The event takes place at the Ledbetter Community Center. The event includes bingo from 4-6 p.m., a fried chicken meal at 5 p.m. (dine-in or to-go) and a live auction starting at 6:30 p.m. Woelfel said Ledbetter VFD had to curtail fundraising activities over the past two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Woelfel said his small department depends greatly on the Firemen’s Feast and other fundraisers to pay for fire equipment, maintenance and operations.
