Brush Fire Burns In Ledbetter Area

A stubborn brush fire burned about four acres of land in the Ledbetter area Friday afternoon, Sept. 8. Ledbetter Volunteer Fire Department got the call shortly before 4 p.m. Ledbetter Fire Chief Kevin Woelfel said fire was burning in thick brush on both sides of FM 1291 near Bell Settlement Rd. when he arrived.

“It looked like it started on the east side of the road and jumped to the west side, but it’s hard to say what caused it,” Woelfel said.

Ledbetter VFD responded with four fire trucks and 11 firefighters. Woelfel called for assistance from Round Top VFD, which sent four fire trucks and seven firefighters, and Carmine VFD, which respond with five fire trucks and eight personnel. Texas Forest Service also responded with two bulldozers and a fire engine. The four agencies battled the fire until around 8 p.m. Fayette County EMS and the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office also responded. Ledbetter VFD returned to the property twice on Saturday to douse some small fires that rekindled.
