The finer points of painting quilt blocks will be taught Friday, Oct. 7, at an enrichment class at Blinn College-Schulenburg.

The Leisure Learning class will be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. in Room 126 on the Schulenburg Campus. The class is $125, which includes all materials, and is limited to 12 participants. During the class, students will complete a quilt block square to take home.

Instructors Margaret Atkins and Rhoda Gersch will demonstrate how to paint quilt block patterns onto plywood, canvas, or other media. The art form has grown in popularity as indoor or outdoor decorative items, including being displayed on barns and other buildings. Atkins and Gersch are founders of a quilt block painting “trail site” in Winchester, a small unincorporated community in Fayette County.

The art form, in which quilt designs are placed on a square wooden block then marked on a grid and painted, is believed to have originated in the Midwest. Atkins and Gersch became fascinated with the craft after Gersch’s sister in Kansas took a class and came to Fayette County to teach them.
