“How shall we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?” So wails the singer in Psalm 137:4.

In this strange, new, post-COVID world, how shall we sing? Bring your voice as an answer, joining Dr. Paulo Gomes, music director of Blinn College and Artistic Director and Conductor of the Houston Masterworks Chorus, for a choral retreat July 30. The workshop will take place 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, 156 N. Monroe, La Grange. All singers and choir members are welcome to attend free of charge.

Dr. Gomes has demonstrated the vibrancy and joy of choral music through his spirit and conducting at Blinn College, Brenham. Each year Blinn’s choral concerts at Festival Hill have thrilled audiences. The singers’ enthusiasm springs from their love for music and his guidance.

Like any great art, choral singing requires time and dedication. Choir clinics, workshops, and retreats provide fresh inspiration. St. James Episcopal Church offers this choir retreat to all singers ninth grade and older.

Dr. Gomes, guest conductor, will lead participants in classics such as “Cantate Domino” as well as popular contemporary anthems: “To Love Our God,” “There’s a Wideness in God’s Mercy,” “And Can It Be.” These songs and others will provide opportunity for fresh insight into music, song, and the wonder of worship.

Many today lament, “The rich choral singing of the church is gone.” Not so! Join Dr. Gomes, your singing friends and neighbors in renewing the music that inspires our lives and our worship, Saturday, July 30.
