Blessings Come in Threes as Tiny Triplets Arrive Home
Due in Oct. But Born in July, Kasparek Trio Now Thriving
November, as you undoubtedly know, is a month in which we all give thanks. But this month isn’t just about full bellies and full kitchens during Thanksgiving. It’s also a time we set aside for reflecting, enjoying the company of our loved ones, and counting our blessings. Diane and Kenn Kasparek especially have new and early blessings to account for this holiday season as something came a lot sooner than expected…triplets!
“They were spontaneous triplets,” said Diane. “We wanted a third child, but we were blessed with a third, fourth, and a fifth!” Originally due on October 7, the triplets were born on July 24 in Austin at St. David’s Medical Center.
Diane shares what happened that day, “It was quite unexpected, being so early. I had an appointment that morning with my maternal fetal medicine doctor. The babies all looked great and were growing appropriately. I remember not feeling great that day, but didn’t think much of it. I started feeling more uncomfortable later that evening and tried to rest, which is difficult to do with our 5-yearold Benjamin and 3-year-old Hannah who are two young, very curious, and concerned children. Around 6:30 p.m. I called my doctor just to fill her in and around 8 p.m. I realized that what I thought were Braxton Hicks contractions, were actually the real thing. I knew we needed to get to the hospital quickly so we got in the car and rushed to the hospital. I called my doctor on the way to tell her these babies were coming tonight and at one point I was convinced they were going to be born in the car on the way there, I was praying that wouldn’t be the case!
“We got to the emergency room and waited for what seemed like an eternity and finally, someone came to take us up to the labor and delivery floor. We got ready for surgery and the triplets were born at about 10:30 p.m. that night by emergency c-section.”
Evelyn Elizabeth weighed 2 lbs 10 oz, Owen Michael weighed 3 lbs 9 oz, and Daniel Anthony weighed 3 lbs 2 oz. “I visited every day,” said Diane. And as of October 11, all three are at home. Evelyn and Daniel were released a little earlier than Owen. “Owen had to stay the longest, which surprised us because we always thought he’d be the first home He’s always been the biggest. However, after dealing with anemia, he was often very sleepy, so he wasn’t completing feedings as regularly as the other two and he was also on some medication that needed to be monitored by the doctors,” said Diane. But now they are making up for lost time as each of their personalities is starting to come out. Diane said, “Even though they sleep quite a bit and cry from time to time, they each definitely have their own little personalities. Evelyn is very calm, whereas the boys, who aren’t identical, are a bit more rowdy.”
So how does it feel for Diane and Kenn to be parents of five now? “For both of us, it’s been a bit surreal,” said Diane who met Kenn in 2003 at her 16th birthday party and soon started dating after that. They got married in 2010.
“We didn’t find out we were having triplets until 20 weeks along. Originally the doctors thought it was just twins! We feel very blessed but also somewhat stressed since they were born so prematurely. The biggest challenge has been juggling it all, caring for the triplets and going to appointments, having a 3- and 5-year-old involved in activities, and Kenn went back to work soon after the triplets came home, so it’s tough. But most importantly we just want to make sure they are growing to be as healthy as possible and Benjamin and Hannah are both very proud older siblings and love the triplets. It has been so fun to see them with the babies. They really enjoy helping us take care of them. They are sweet and caring big siblings. Thankfully, we’ve also had an enormous amount of help from our family, friends, and parents.”
Diane’s parents, Rose and Daniel Cernoch, owners of Cernoch Plumbing now have 12 grandchildren and both were able to visit and hold the triplets while they were in the hospital. Rose said, “We are very blessed and thankful that all three are healthy. It is a bit overwhelming but we have family and friends who have sent meals for Diane and Kenn and that has been so helpful. Also many have given monetary gifts to use for diapers etc. Daniel and I ask God for our strength so we can continue to be of help.”
So as we start November and consider what we are grateful for remember good things come in threes, or for Diane and Kenn, blessings come in threes.
