A Black History Month Celebration and Parade takes place in Schulenburg on Saturday, Feb. 24.

Deacon Clarence Stewart of St. James Missionary Baptist Church will serve as the parade marshall. The parade starts at 10 a.m. at the corner of North Main St. and Lyons Avenue.

The parade will end at Schulenburg Hall (formerly Knights of Columbus Hall). A special Black History Month program will take place inside the hall starting at 11 a.m. The program will include poetry readings from local youth, praise dancers and a keynote speech by Steven Adams.

Adams, a retired U.S. Navy military policeman, grew up in Schulenburg and graduated from Schulenburg High in 1996. He served 20 years in the Navy. During his time in service he traveled to more than 60 countries in support of the Global War on Terrorism and various operations including Operation Enduring Freedom.

Adams was awarded numerous citations that include the Navy and Marine Corp Commendation Medal, and multiple Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medals. Adams is also a Graduate of Troy University with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice, and is currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Cybersecurity from the University of Texas at Tyler.

Then on Sunday, Feb. 25, Steven Chapel AME Church in Schulenburg will hold a Black History Month service at 11 a.m. under the direction of Rev. Dr. Pamela Sattlewhite. The service will remember, celebrate and praise God for his powerful work in shaping the lives of African American pioneers and trailblazers.
