American History Essay Contest Winners Announced
The Smith-McMillan chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution sponsors various events throughout the year to promote historic preservation, education, and patriotism. Two such events are the American History Essay Contest which is open to students in grades 5-8 and the Patriots of the American Revolution DAR High School Essay Contest which is open to students in grades 9-12. Students may attend public, private, or parochial schools, as well as homeschooling.
This year, essay contest packets were provided to seven public schools in the La Grange, Schulenburg, Fayetteville, and Round Top-Carmine districts, as well as one parochial school, and two homeschool groups.
The essay submissions were judged separately by three retired history teachers. The winners were determined, and their essays advanced to the state level competition.
This year’s American History Essay Contest winner was Caden Tovey of Round Top-Carmine High School. He is the son of Charles and Diane Tovey, and a student of Brandi Venghaus.
The winner of the Patriots of the American Revolution DAR High School Essay Contest was Eleanor Carey of La Grange High School. She is the daughter of Sarah and Richard Carey, and a student of Tracey Faske.
