All Fayette County Veterans Named Honorary Marshals for Saturday’s Downtown Fair Parade
As part of the ongoing America 250 celebrations across this area, all Fayette County Veterans are being celebrated as honorary Parade Marshals, along with Fayette County Judge Dan Mueller, for this year’s Fayette County Fair Parade which begins Saturday at 10:30 a.m. in downtown La Grange.
All local veterans from all military branches are invited to participate in the parade.
Fayette County has a long and proud history of military service.
As the Veterans Memorial, which was dedicated on the courthouse square in 1987 states: “No greater sacrifice can be made by the citizens of a democratic nation than to serve in its armed forces in times of war or in times of peace. Fayette County proudly honors and pays tribute to its citizens who accepted the call to arms and served gallantly in securing freedom for the State of Texas and maintaining it for their nation throughout history.”
The nearby Muster Oak at the corner of Washington and Colorado Street in downtown La Grange, under which Saturday’s parade will pass, serves as a reminder of this area’s spirit of military service. Under that oak generations of local service members have gathered before going off to war. One of the markers under the tree states: “Here on the courthouse square, the scarred remains of what was once a mighty oak marks the spot from which Fayette County has on every occasion sent its sons to battle. Wives, mothers and sweethearts have bade farewell here and sent their men to war, each time to win acclaim as true patriots.
“They held in their keeping the safety of the Republic. They kept alight the lamp of liberty because they refused to betray their Texas heritage by abandoning the eternal values embodied in the concepts of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Their patriotic sense of duty helped to preserve the American way of life, and their record of service to God and Country is almost without peer. They lived and died so that the eternal verities by which men live shall not perish from the earth.”

Of note: Thursday Fair is free to everyone; Children up to age 4 are free every day. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday kids ages 5-15 are free before 6 p.m. Carnival opens at 5 p.m. each day.
