$64,000 Seized After Traffic Stop on I-10

Fayette County Sheriff Keith Korenek reports that on Sunday, Feb. 1, around 9:19 p.m. Deputy Cody Willams conducted a traffic stop on a 2016 Jeep Patriot for a traffic violation on I-10 westbound around the 658 mile marker. Deputy Williams met with the driver 49-year-old Faliciano Martinez Fernandez of San Benito.

A consent to search the vehicle was given by Fernandez and a concealed exhaust compartment was located by Williams. After entry was made into the compartment Williams located wrapped bundles of US currency.

Fernandez was placed under arrest and transported to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center charged with unlawful use of a criminal instrument and money laundering. Total amount of US currency was $64,000.
