1976: Three Sets of Twins Born to Bartosh Cow

April 9-13, 1976

Gilbert Bartosh, who lived at Ellinger, had a cow that gave birth to six calves in three years. Two years before, she had twin calves, and the same happened last year. They were all males. Last week, she presented her owner with twins once more, a male and a female. Perhaps it was because she was a threeway cross: Charolais, Brahma and Hereford.

An Alabama man sought for three days following the shooting death of Officer Mark Frederick of the Texas Department of Public Safety was captured Tuesday, shortly after the officer was buried in Houston. Sheriff T.A. Maddox of Austin County said the 25-year-old was armed with a 9 mm automatic pistol when he was apprehended at 4:45 p.m. in a field 12 miles south of Sealy. Dogs sniffed out the suspect.

Dr. Robert A Calvert, an associate professor of history at Texas A&M University, was to deliver the main address at the organizational meeting and luncheon of the Guy Smith-James McMillan Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution on Sunday, April 11 in the parish hall at St. James Episcopal Church in La Grange. This was the first DAR chapter organized in Fayette County.

“Just about everybody has been hoping for a three-inch rain, and that’s just about what we got,” commented County Extension Agent Clinton R. Bippert, in recounting the immeasurable benefits resulting from precipitation that fell on Sunday and Monday. “We’ve just about made 50% of our crop with this rain, and it means we’ll be looking for another like this by early May,” the agent said.

Five-year-old Glenn Gibson Jr. mangled his arm in an accident at the downtown La Grange Magic Wash. He was rushed to Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, where efforts to save his arm were unsuccessful. He reportedly placed his arm into a washer in operation and got it caught in the whirling mechanism.

Deposits in Fayette County banks moved up almost $2 million during the quarter since the December 31 call. At that time, the eight county banks had a record total of $81,300,299 on deposit. The latest call for the same eight banks showed a total of $83,204, 170. 43. Most of the increase was in deposits at the First National of La Grange.

La Grange High School students captured seven first places in the District 25-AA University Interscholastic League Literary meet at Blinn College in Brenham. These are some of the contest placings: Number Sense – Bruce G. Williams, first; Charles Hensel, second; and David Joost, third. Spelling – Katherine Holub, first and Wesley Joost, second. Debate – Bruce G. Williams and Donna L. Wallace, first team; Sheila Keith and Rebecca Freeman, second team. Poetry – Kara Graham, first. Typewriting – Lisa Franklin, first. Funeral services were held for: Mrs. Matilda Zbranek, 79, of La Grange; Mrs. Edna W. Ilse, 86, of Ellinger; Walter F. Gartner, 74, of Ellinger; Leon Charles Gartner, 76, of Ellinger; Mrs. Louise Weber Schaefer, 89, of La Grange; Mrs. Eleanor Frances Kubala, 63, of Fayetteville; and Willie O. Renck, 80, a former Round Top resident.

Fayette County students named to the dean’s list at Sam Houston State University were: Tony Gabe Dooley, Frank Kenneth Heger, Betty Gail Heintschel, Dennis Gene Winkler, Charles Henry Kana, Rita Bernadette Kruppa, Catherine Marie Munsch, Carobeth Fuchs and Patricia Ann Bush.

Kenny Hatfield reached the zenith of baseball heights when he pitched a perfect game for the La Grange Leopards to defeat Smithville’s Tigers, 4-0. Hatfield did not allow a Tiger to get aboard in the regulation seven-inning game, mowing down 21 batters in a row, 14 via the strikeout route and his mates getting the other seven putouts via flawless support. La Grange got five safeties, with Bert Vasut connecting for two, including a double. The Leopards plated two in the second inning. Tommy Supak led off with a double to left field. Jeff Lindemann walked, and Vasut advanced the runners with a bunt sacrifice. Kenny Zimmerhanzel rolled to third, but Supak beat the throw to the plate. Larry Bippert then lined a single to left and Lindemann romped home. The other two counters were scoreboarded in the third.

The new home of the La Grange Softball Association at the Fayette County Fairgrounds was rapidly nearing completion. The playing field had been filled and packed, concession stands and restrooms erected and backstop and bleacher seating framework were underway. The field was to be used for the first time when the association staged its second 1976 tournament on May 1 and 2.
