A False Distinction

To the Editor: Frank Cernosek’s letter draws a false distinction between settlers and immigrants, misrepresenting both history and language. The Oxford English Dictionary defines an immigrant as “a person who comes to live permanently in a different country from the one they were born in.” That includes the very settlers who arrived in North America from Europe to establish colonies.

What Would Jesus Do?

To the Editor: When I read letters to the editor in the FCR, I am baffled by certain writers who, while proclaiming their love for Jesus and quoting scripture, proceed to vent so much venom toward undocumented immigrants, Democrats, liberals, and anyone who doesn’t think President Trump is God’s gift to humanity. Historically, liberals battled conservatives to give all Americans the right to vote, to have safe working conditions, equal access to education, laws against child labor, civil rights, social security, medicare, environmental protections, safe food, safe air, safe water, safe medications, and much more.

LG Bridge Taking Forever To Renovate

To the Editor: The front page of the June 25, 2024 issue of the FC Record showed a photo of the “Old Bridge Gets a New Coat of Paint” showing the bridge across the Colorado River and how it was covered during a paint job. The last sentence in the story stated “The bridge work is scheduled for completion in February of next year.” Here it is October of next year and we still can not use it.

The Complex Issue of Immigration

To the Editor: Is America built by immigrants or settlers, or both? A recent letter writer claims that settlers build, and immigrants take advantage of their accomplishments. The letter reasons that “modern immigrants” only come “here to eat the fruits and the good things offered by an established country.” Perhaps the crux of the problem is “modern” immigrants.

Trio of Judges to Rule on Congressional Map

The same plaintiffs who are challenging the state’s 2021 congressional map are asking a panel of three federal judges to block using the new GOP-approved districts from being used in the March midterms. The Texas Tribune reported this is the first legal test for the redrawn districts, which are intended to increase the Texas congressional seats held by Republicans by five.

Beware the Powers

If you have ever attended Sunday school or VBS, you likely heard about the armor of God. It comes from a famous passage in Ephesians 6, where Christians are instructed to clothe themselves with truth, righteousness, faith, and so on, to be ready for the challenges of life. It makes a nice lesson for children because, not only is it important, but the language the apostle Paul uses is visual and can be easily remembered. What is not discussed nearly as often, and certainly not in children’s classes, is the verse that introduces and explains this section of Scripture.

Governor Breaks Ranks To Like Ike

Allen Shivers joined Dwight Eisenhower on Oct. 14, 1952 for a wreath-laying ceremony at the Alamo. This unprecedented show of support by the Democratic governor for the Republican presidential nominee crushed any hope Adlai Stevenson had of carrying the Lone Star State.
