Round Top Concerns

To the Editor: What a shame. I don’t know what is going on in Round Top but, as a long time visitor for the antique show, I can tell you that it just isn’t right.

Remember When?

October 21-31, 1975 The La Grange Leopards made it look easy again. Scoring every time they got hold of the football in the first half, they piled up a 35-0 intermission margin and coasted to a 42-0 victory over the Weimar Wildcats at Leopard Field.

The Law of the Gift

Pope Saint John Paul II said, “A person cannot fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself.” As we continue to trek deeper into the world of AI, social media, and polarizing ideologies of the secular age, it seems that more and more people are having a hard time understanding the world around them and their own selfidentity. What once was clear has now become blurry. This theme of gift and giving ourselves to another, St. John Paul II calls the “law of the gift.” The law of the gift is essentially recognizing that our fulfillment and satisfaction in this life does not come from acquiring things, but instead by giving oneself to others; firstly to God and then to those around us.

Weeds to the Rescue

My best teachers always said, “Study nature. When we work with Nature and not against nature, things go better.” My latest Nature observation came when I was cleaning cattle troughs. There are three concrete cattle troughs on our ranch. Since my cattle do not drink from ponds, I clean the troughs after each pasture rotation. Recently I started to clean the two concrete troughs in the corral. They were totally dry, so I use a broom and shovel (as a dust pan) to clean them.

Secret Plan To Save The South Hinged On Texas

An obscure Confederate major with a famous last name presented a secret proposal to the governor of Texas on Oct. 27, 1863. Next came the hard part -- convincing Francis Lubbock that he alone could save the South.

Selective Framing

To the Editor: I commend Sandy Hooper, in her last LTTE, for her commitment to the written word. Few can stretch a single partisan narrative into a full-length endurance test for the reader.

Immigration Distinction

To the Editor: The various writers of letters in the Oct. 17 edition of the Record all jump up and down about “immigration” and try to use examples of all of us being descendants from “immigrants.” My own great-great grandfather from the Slovak region of Eastern Europe lost an arm and a leg fighting in the Prussian Army.

Remember Storm Troopers

To the Editor: A WWII trivia question: Were the storm troopers of Germany in the 1930’s named after a rain storm or a snow storm or an ICE storm?? Anyone remember? Nicholas Mercer Round Top .
