To the Editor: The La Grange city council on July 13, 2020 was given an educated opportunity to base their decision of whether to enact an emergency ordinance for the city requiring the wearing of face masks, from several members of the community that attended the council meeting. The council chose to follow in the foot steps of the unconstitutional executive order by way of enacting the emergency ordinance.

To the editor: In the spirit of complimenting other writers of letters to the editor, I liked Katelyn Bernsen’s (15) use of science, rather than tactics (including rants and spitting that have gone viral) some people have used to challenge mask wearing. She noted that experts are uncertain how effective masks are.

I loved catching fly balls with my glove. Trouble was there never were too many kids around when I did get a chance to do so. My only ball-throwing companion was my cousin Jimmy Kana, who was about two years younger than me. He was a pretty stout youngster and could really hit long fly balls. We had a problem because whenever he did try to hit fly balls for me to catch, he hit more foul tips and ground balls than fly balls. I spent more time chasing these errant hits than I did actually catching fly balls. I figured I could grow old waiting for a good one to catch. Therefore, I put my ever-expanding brain to use and came up with an ingenious gadget that would guarantee a great fly ball every time.

We, as Americans, have learned a whole new language through this Coronavirus Pandemic. Some words we have heard before but haven’t been used that much in our society. New words or phrases have appeared that are weird but have become a norm in conversations.

Muldoon was a whole lot quieter this past Fourth of July with the cancellation of the celebration in the Park. Even with the cancellation of formal celebrations, private ones could be heard all through the community. It was wonderful to see so many still celebrating the birth of our nation. There were lots of fireworks going off starting around dusk and going into the evening. It was great to see some form of normal going on in this time of strangeness.

• Christopher Coronado, a former Somerville High School teacher and softball coach charged in 2018 with an improper relationship with a student, pleaded guilty to two counts and received seven years deferred adjudicated probation. He was also fined $2,000, plus court costs and a Crime Stoppers fee and was ordered to perform 120 hours of community service restitution, while agreeing to urinalysis, drug-alcohol evaluation and any treatment deemed necessary, according to the Burleson County Attorney’s Office.

The Carmine Chamber of Commerce is planning to have their Casino Night on Saturday, Aug. 8, beginning at 6 p.m. This year will be a German theme: Prost Casino Night. Individual tickets will be $30, which includes the meal, drinks and entertainment. We will also have tables for eight available. Please contact any chamber director for more information.
