In March 1976 Dick Barton, my fatherin- law, purchased the Fayette County Record from Bonner McMillion. He would be the 3rd owner and publisher of The Record since its beginnings in 1922.

March 2-5, 1976 Richard L. (Dick) Barton of Rosenberg purchased the majority interest in Fayette Publishing Co.

Lately I have been engaged in conversation about church and Sundays. In our church, we have had some conversations about the difficulty of being at church on Sundays due to so many other obligations on Sundays. In response to these conversations and the reality of competing obligations on Sundays, we have moved our educational ministries to Wednesdays.

To the Editor and the Citizens of La Grange, As my current term on the La Grange City Council draws to a close this May, I want to express my deepest gratitude to the community for the opportunity to serve Ward 3. These past three years have been a privilege. In every meeting and every vote, I have strived to be prepared, to represent the desires of our citizens, and to promote managed growth that honors the character of our town.

Before the messenger disappeared in the pre-dawn darkness of Mar. 3, 1836, the hollow-eyed colonel whispered, “Every morning at daybreak, I will fire a cannon as a sign that we still hold the fort, but when the cannon is heard no more, its silence will tell the Alamo has fallen.”

All it takes to remind you of why you like country living is a quick trip from Houston or Austin. I think the clarity dawns as I turn off 290 onto the Greenvine Road, a two-lane country blacktop.

The questions never asked have no answers, and I am left wondering. It occurs to me now, far too late, that curiosity ripens after the funerals.

To the editor: The extremely opposing views in this Opinion section is representative of the volatile polarization we have across our nation. The root cause of this is a Biblical worldview versus a non-Biblical worldview.

To the editor: Our 250th Anniversary encourages us to gauge how well the civic principles championed by the Revolution endure in the effort to create a constitutional republic dedicated to self-determination. The Declaration was asserted to agree with “the laws of Nature and of Nature’s God.” What were these selfevident truths? “That all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” These are lofty, inspiring ideals.
