Misery Loves Company: Spring Break on the River

We were sitting on a sandbar in wet clothes somewhere in the middle of the Colorado River, on the first evening of our 19-mile Spring Break kayak journey, when my wife looked at me and said, “I can’t remember when I felt this miserable.”

Happy St. Patrick’s Day. Many of you are wearing green in some shape or form. You have friends and family (and leprechauns) that will find it an appropriate time to pinch you for not wearing it. How did we get to today, where we celebrate St. Patrick by wearing green, drinking green beer, to eat corned beef and cabbage, and attend parades and other festivities to celebrate the death of a Christian missionary?

In this creative telling, “Noble Harry Truman” left office at age 68 and lived in poverty on a $112.56/month military pension, refusing to profit from his time in office.
