Remember When?

Developer Tom McKenzie took his plans for a new 21-lot subdivision in the northern part of La Grange to city council. The development was on 5.22 acres known as the Henry Berry plat, located between County Line and Helter Sts. McKenzie told the council he would first develop seven lots facing County Line, with others to follow. He hoped to begin work in about a month. Helter Street, he said, would connect with County Line at a full 60-foot width through the property. The developer added that the project would comply with the city’s subdivision code in all respects.

A Gift For A Gunfighter

On June 13, 1881, Ben Thompson, gunfighter and lawman, received a gold-plated target pistol in the mail from his new friend, famed showman “Buffalo Bill” Cody. The two men met a year and a half earlier, when Cody brought his stage production, a melodrama loosely based on his own exploits called “Scouts of the Plains,” to Austin in December 1879.

No More Wasted Water

Up until 1953, the only supply of running water we had on our farm was a windmill that pumped water into a metal cistern. Before the metal one, dad had a huge wooden cistern but I can’t remember that one. We had water piped underground to the kitchen where there was just one faucet over the kitchen sink. We also had one hydrant at the entrance of our house. This is where everyone “washed off” before we came into the house. One towel would hang on the fence near the faucet used by all the family members. This towel wouldn’t be washed until “wash day” which usually was on Saturday.

Perspective on Fathers’ Day

I have not figured out how yet, but one of these days I would like to be a clean, stand up comedian on the side. Honestly, as a kid who grew up extremely shy and never wanted anyone to recognize me, it is quite a thing to consider. It may never happen, but maybe . . .
