No Second Term For Depression Governor

Ross Shaw Sterling kicked off his campaign for governor on Jun. 20, 1930 by introducing himself to the Huntsville crowd as “the fat boy from Buffalo Bayou.” The 265-pound multimillionaire poked fun at his gigantic girth to divert attention from his much bigger bank account.

We Dropped The Ball, Folks!

Iwas truly flabbergasted when I first heard that the New World Screw Worm was on the move toward Texas again, after having been wiped out in the United States and Northern Mexico in the late 1960s and early 1970s. This should never have happened again. We failed to treat this as an on-going, serious international threat, a major public health problem very likely to cross borders again, if it remained an issue in countries south of us. What happened to “Treat there, never here”?

The Tables Have Turned

When we become mothers, we have no idea what we are getting ourselves into. What did we think? That having a baby was like getting a new puppy? Oh, how cute. Not even close. For me, the first time I held and admired my baby boy, it hit me like a freight train that I just set myself up for a lifetime of worry. No one warned me about this. I was overwhelmed. When I had that realization, I think I cried non-stop for the next three days. I knew that one day he would grow up, move away, I wouldn’t know where he was, who he was with or what he was doing. You think the worry might ease when they grow up but it only gets worse. Even now, I can get anxious with worry when there’s no reason to worry at all. It’s awful. But all that aside, if you raise them right, which is the goal, they’ll be there for you when you need it. No mother is perfect and we all make mistakes along the way, but unconditional love, listening to what they have to say without judgment and respecting them goes a long way to ensure they are on the right track to be healthy, happy and independent individuals. I think I at least succeeded in those things.

Artificial Intelligence Runs on Electricity

Like many people, I thought data centers were mostly about buildings. After all, when we hear the term “data center,” we picture a large warehouse full of computers. The bigger the building, the more computers it can hold. That seemed logical enough. But while researching the growing data-center industry, I learned something surprising. The most important thing isn’t necessarily the building. It’s resourcing the electricity needed to run the computers.

Produced Water, AI Data Centers and The Legislature - Part I

Maybe someday, people using AI will find cures for cancers, Alzheimer’s and other diseases, safely remove plaque from arteries, solve the world water crisis, and discover a clean, cheap, unlimited source of energy. There is, at least currently, a downside to AI: data centers. As we have all heard, AI data centers use huge quantities of water for cooling and electricity for power.

Love America Enough to Fix It

To the editor: Sandy Hooper’s response to my earlier letter missed the central question I raised: Why, in the richest and most powerful nation in history, can a serious illness or injury still push ordinary American families into financial ruin, even when they have health insurance? That is not a partisan question. It is a practical one.

Thankful for the USA

To the editor: I want to thank Sandy Hooper for the very informative letter about the many countries of the world. We do live in the best country, but it is in danger of being taken over by socialism and communism.

The Missing Children

To the editor: One of the most horrific things I have learned since the Trump presidency began is the fact of all the missing children ‘lost’ during the Biden/ Harris administration. I was aware that the number of children reported lost was around 300,000.

A Nation of Christians

To the editor: The author of a recent editorial wrote: “the United States was not founded as a Christian nation.” It is true that the United States was not founded as a Christian nation. It is also true that the United States was founded by a nation of Christians.
