Widen the Existing Bluff Road

Letter to the Editor

To the editor:

There has been a great deal of discussion about a new road lately to reroute traffic from the Bluff. Several years ago, when I was still in office, I proposed to TxDOT that we widen the road on the Bluff. With the guidance of Mr. Bayless, who was the district engineer at that time, the job was done. What I am now proposing is to widen the Bluff road again, 20 or 30 feet. They would have to put down piling. It should not be a problem if they can build a bridge, they could certainly extend the road on the Bluff. Both of the current proposed routes have problems. If Tx-DOT would build a new road around the Hostyn area, the gravel trucks would continue to use FM 155 and would still go down the Bluff. And here is the kicker, even if you build a beautiful eight lane road, it doesn’t mean the truckers will have to take it. Texas has a very strong and powerful trucking lobby. The trucks can use any road that they want. They will still go down the Bluff. Instead of spending all that money and ruining some people’s lives, lets try to think out of the box. And if that does not work, put a large, flashing stop sign at the top of the hill before entering the Bluff.
