Unwinding the Spin
To the editor:
The author of last week’s editorial Spinning Information accused me of “lies or a spin on information.” I feel compelled to respond to such an attack upon my integrity.
The author says, “Migrants are neither legal or illegal when they cross the border.” According to Guzman Law Firm PLLC, a top rated criminal defense attorney in Laredo, TX, “A person is considered to have unlawfully or improperly entered the U.S. if they: Enter the U.S. at a location with no immigration officers present, or at a non-designated point of entry. Unlawful entry can therefore include physically crossing the border at a non-sanctioned location. Crossing the border illegally is not only a felony, but it is a federal crime.” How is it a lie or spin to say that migrants who commit such a felony are illegal migrants?
The author also states that “Democrats are using the justice system as a weapon against political opponents [is] just the writer’s opinion.” I agree that it is my opinion. However, it may be more than my opinion. It may be true. I presented some anecdotal evidence in my discussion, and there is much more that could be said to support such a conclusion.
Truth is absolute and knowable. We can only arrive at the truth about the important issues of our time when we have thoughtful and informed discussions. Such discussions must be driven by logic and not by emotion. I hope that in the future we can confine our discussions to the issues and dispense with ad hominem attacks such as “lies” and “drink the kool-ade.”
Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life.” John 14:6 NIV. Perhaps all of us would achieve better results in our quest for the truth if we took a step back and started over with Him.
