Turn Bluff Into Speed Trap
To the editor:
According to the Houston Chronicle; as seen in a Googlesearch, Lott, Texas, on U.S. Hwy. 77; and Rosebud, Texas, on U.S. Hwy. 77; are two of the ten Texas roadway towns wellknown as “speed traps.” From personal experience, I know of quickly-reducing speed from normal to very slow in only a short distance; hidden lowerlimit signs suddenly around curves or shrubbery; excessively low limits through town; or confusing school-zone limits when school is not in session.
Inmyopinion,ifLaGrange, were added to that “speed trap” list, for a really good reason, most of the problems on The Bluff would be solved. As a “newcomer” (only here for 27 years), I have never seen law enforcement present or issuing citations, on either end of The Bluff for speeding or reckless driving. Surely they have/do, but when or how often?
Since the road was widened a few feet already years ago, there IS space in either lane to safely go up/down The Bluff. The problem is speeding.
While trying to maintain the posted speed now, I feel intimidated by vehicles behind me, for “going too slow;” and they ride my bumper and surely, they are calling me “some old fogy with old ideas.” Old ideas such as hoping not being involved in a terrible crash, or old ideas like staying alive.
Taking farm land, as proposed in both other plans, is a terrible idea. Widening the existing road would be limited to disturbing only a few properties and much cheaper……..a no-brainer. Simply enforcing speed limits and announcing to the world that “speeding on The Bluff will get you a ticket.” A safe spot to pull over to receive your citation could be established at the top and bottom of The Bluff.
Judge Ed’s opinion to widen The Bluff road has merit, or as my thoughts about strictly enforcing speed limits to make travelers aware of the “speed trap” in La Grange on The Bluff. It would save taxpayers potentially millions of dollars which could be used for more law enforcement.
If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.
