Surprised at Brossmann’s Comments

To the editor:

I agree with Commissioner Brossmann. On January 22, 2022, at the Republican Primary Forum in Schulenburg, he said, “For us to be able to keep the tax rate low for citizens is amazing; the way we’re able to do that is by the growth we have in the county. The amount of people coming, the businesses coming in, that’s the revenue that we’re able to keep continuing to the future to where we can keep the tax rate the same.”

He went on to say, “We need growth, we need people coming in here to continue to build and make our community a better place. The good thing about having people come in, build homes, it helps with the tax burden. That’s what helps keep our tax rates so low. The more tax revenue we have, your tax rate stays the same. We should take it as a compliment that these people want to come here because it means we’re doing things the right way.”

When asked about what the most challenging aspects of the Commissioner’s position, he said, “ One of the most challenging things so far has probably been to the side of the payroll and the benefits for your employees, to make sure you take care of the people who are serving the citizens of Fayette County. If you take care of your employees, you get good employees, happy employees.”

Commissioner Brossmann is 100% correct! We need growth, not just people moving in and paying property and sales taxes, but we need businesses coming in that will create good paying jobs and opportunities for our citizens. So I was surprised to read in the Record that he opposes the film studio project that wants to come to Fayette County. This may be the opportunity we need to put businesses in the empty buildings in Schulenburg, revitalize our community and increase the tax revenue for the county. In the words of our Commissioner, “we should take it as a compliment that these people want to come here.”
