Running Home to La Grange

Last spring, I realized I had let my health slip. To get back on track, I signed up for the Wild Hare Trail Race, a 25K run at Bluff Creek Ranch. It was an ambitious goal, considering my inconsistent running history. But with my kids busy swimming at Camp Lone Star, I found the perfect opportunity to start training.

Initially, I ran along Lone Star Road. As my mileage increased, I craved more variety. So, I began parking at the Square and exploring La Grange’s charming streets. I ran past historic homes and new businesses, discovering hidden gems along the way. I witnessed the town’s history come alive as vibrant murals were painted on the walls.

My routes took me across the new bridge towards Walmart, where I’d wave to the workers restoring the old one. I circled the Frisch Auf golf course, enjoying scenic river views. I ran towards the city cemetery, reflecting on the generations of families who have shaped our community.

I passed the football stadium, inspired by the dedication of our young athletes. I ran by Hope Hill, witnessing families rebuilding their lives after the flood. I jogged through neighborhoods, catching glimpses of people enjoying their morning coffee on their porches.

My runs always concluded at Latte on the Square, where I’d rehydrate with water and coffee. (Apologies to anyone who encountered my sweaty self.) There, I’d greet the friendly faces of La Grange and feel a sense of belonging.

To the wonderful people of La Grange: Thank you for your waves, smiles, and for not running me over. You’ve made this outsider, who moved here 20 years ago, feel right at home.
