Respect for Our Namesake

To the editor:

I was so pleased to read the profile on our county’s namesake, General Lafayette, in Friday’s issue. When I was a “tween,” I had the pleasure of living just outside of Paris for two years, (Dad was military.)

One of our most memorable school field trips was to the cemetery where the General is buried. That’s where I learned how honored the people of France are to have such a hero to claim as their own.

What impressed us all was that ever since his monument was erected, there has been a US flag flying over his grave, even during WWII. Evidently, even the Nazis respected him enough to allow the US flag to remain in place during their occupation of France.

Reading that piece made me even happier that my parents decided to make Fayette County home once Dad retired.
