City council formally approved rehabilitation treatment for the historic Muster Oak in downtown La Grange. A contract awarded to Columbus Tree and Lawn Service involved cleaning the large cavity at the base of the oak, as well as several other smaller cavities, sterilization, filling in the cavities to provide bases for new growth and cutting out decayed branches.

Glynis Tietjen was crowned queen of the Schulenburg Centennial Celebration from a field of 19 contestants at a colorful pageant at Schulenburg High School. The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Egon Tietjen of Swiss Alp, Glynis was the featured twirler at Schulenburg High School and vice president of the FHA chapter. She also participated in drama and choral activities. The first runner-up was Karen Ginn; second, Jeanette Schindler; third, Kari Pettit; and fourth, Carolyn Krischke. Arthur Strobel won the prize for the fullest beard at the Schulenburg Centennial. Boots Wagner had the best-groomed beard, Cecil Roche the most unique, Dennis Jurek the sexiest and Joe Kruppa the worst. Leonard Bartos had the heaviest moustache, Stanley Ohnheiser the sexiest and Gus Bohlmann the sorriest. Hank Stavinoha had the most unique mustache and also received the grand prize in the overall contest.

Funeral services were held for: Lee Flournoy, oldest brother of Fayette County Sheriff T. J. Flournoy, 82, of Highlands; U.S. Navy HT/2 Daniel James Coufal, 25, of Fayetteville; John H. Hrachovy, 64, of Hostyn; Elo H. Ziese, 69, of Round Top; and Joe D. Meyer, 89, of Ellinger.

David Ray Zimmermann was among the 128 students who earned summa cum laude honors in the spring semester from the University of Texas at Austin’s College of Education.

Howard F. Fuchs of Carmine was appointed to a threeyear term on the three-man Fayette County Farmers Home Administration Committee. Mr. Fuchs, who replaced Werner C. Heise from La Grange, joined Leo Heller of Ammannsville and William H. Coleman of Flatonia.

Sacred Heart School was opening its 1973-1974 school year on Wed., Aug. 22. Classes were scheduled from 8:15 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. with a lunch period from 11:40 to 12:30. Teachers were: Sister M. Amata, principal; Mrs. Margaret Churchill; Mrs. John L. Sulak; Mrs. Helen Matocha; Sister Elaine; and Sister Suzanne. In the first four levels, individualized instruction was to be provided, while in grades five through eight, the traditional approach was being used with only some areas individualized.

Eight days of in-service training for the 73-member faculty of La Grange Independent School District was to precede the opening on Thurs., Aug. 23. The school day was scheduled to begin at 8:15 a.m. and close at 3:20 p.m. with a lunch break of 30 or 40 minutes depending on the department. Jim Story of Yoakum had been hired to replace former Leopard coach Leonard May.

Spokesmen for Prause’s Market, Kreuz Market and W.E. Schulze agreed that President Nixon’s freeze on beef prices, as well as grain sales to Russia, were forcing local beef retailers into crisis mode. One of the butchers explained that his market bought only choice beef on the hoof but stood to lose $31 per hundredweight on every No. 1 heifer calf his firm sold at retail under the governmentmandated price freeze.

Janet Zimmermann, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elroy Zimmermann, was on the freshman spring semester honor roll at Texas Woman’s University in Denton.

Walter P. Freytag, recently retired La Grange postmaster, was reported to be doing well at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston, where he had undergone major surgery on Fri., July 27.

Mr. and Mrs. Vic Struve observed their 25th wedding anniversary with an informal gathering at the VFW Home on Sat., Aug. 4. The couple was married in Sacred Heart Catholic Church on July 24, 1948, by the late Rt. Rev. Msgr. S.A. Zientek. They had four daughters: Mrs. Eugene (Barbara) Niemeyer of La Grange, Mrs. James (Carol) Johnson of Austin, and Misses Rita and Pamela Struve of La Grange.

Mr. and Mrs. Ernest G. Otto also observed their 25th wedding anniversary with an open house on Sun., Aug. 5 attended by about 70 guests. Present were their wedding attendants: Charlie Otto of La Grange and Mrs. Olivia Trueper of Austin.

Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Kallus and Mr. and Mrs. Richard F. Kallus visited Victoria on Sunday to attend special KJT ceremonies. Mrs. J.J. Nevlud, formerly of La Grange, was serving as president of the Victoria society. At the gathering, Sister Bernadette Kallus of Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament Convent received a 50-year membership pin. The Kalluses also saw their aunt, Sister Rose Kallus, at the convent and had dinner with Mrs. John Barta, the sister of Mrs. Ernest Kallus.
