REMEMBER WHEN?

When the September grand jury for the 155th District Court of Fayette County reconvened on Tuesday, it returned 12 more felony indictments. That brought the total for the term to 23 indictments, one misdemeanor and five no-bills. The most recent indictments included the following offenses: murder, burglary, possession of a narcotic drug and DWI.

The state comptroller issued La Grange a check for $21,179 representing the 1¢ optional sales and use tax collected in the city for the third quarter of 1972. That brought the year’s sum to $59,826. Third quarter collections in neighboring towns were: Bastrop, $9,381; Bellville, $12,417; Columbus, $18,280; Fayetteville, $1,493l and Schulenburg, $12, 508.

Three La Grange High School band students were seated in the District IV, Region XVIII Texas Music Educators Association All-District Band tryouts. They were: Mark Johnson, first chair trombone; Dennis Zbranek, first chair contrabass clarinet; and Melody Mueller, first chair clarinet. Band directors Wilbur W. Johnson and Jack W. Wiedemann accompanied the students to the Round Rock event.

Funeral services were held for: E.S. Kovar, 78, of La Grange; Mrs. Annie Slubar, 94, of Weimar; Winnie Laura Lehmann, 74, of Ledbetter; the Rev. Austin Hubbard of La Grange; Leo N. Furr, 58, of La Grange; and Mrs. Emma Helcamp, 79, who was buried in the Cistern Public Cemetery.

Quick work by highway patrol officers from La Grange resulted in the arrest of four young out-ofcounty people at Columbus. They were suspected of having stolen the Texas Highway Department’s city limits sign at Plum. The youths were fined for malicious mischief in La Grange.

Seven members of the zone champion La Grange Leopards – four on the offensive unit and three on the defensive list – were placed on the all-star west zone District 13-AAA football team when the coaches met at West Columbia. Five other Leps rated second team units – three on defense and two on offense. Leopards gaining berths on the mythical offensive unit were: Billy Miller, end; Charles Koether, guard; and David Zatopek and Jim Quinn, running backs. All-district defensive Leps were: Freddie Adamcik, interior lineman; Edward Hardy, linebacker; and Charles Mayer, secondary back. Second team picks from La Grange for the runner-up offense included: John Eilert, center; Buddy Grove, running back; second team defense, Maurice Bouldwin, interior lineman; Richard Wagner, end; and Larry Hatfield, secondary back.

The annual membership meeting of the Ellinger Volunteer Fire Department was set for 7 p.m. on Dec. 13 at the Ellinger C of C Hall. With approximately 300 members, the highest number in the organization’s history, the meeting was expected to be very well attended.

The general assembly of the Capital Area Planning Council unanimously chose La Grange city councilman and mayor pro tem K.A. Moellenberndt to serve on CAPCO’s 15-member executive committee. Mr. Moellenberndt succeeded La Grange Mayor L.W. Stolz Jr., whose term of office had expired.

Johnny W. Krause of Round Top, an employee of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service for 36 years, retired. He started work in 1933 with what was then referred to as the AAA program, also called the “plow-up the cotton” initiative. Mr. Krause worked with his father for three years without pay, but beginning in 1936, he received the sum of $1.25 a day. In 1937, he was a ‘chain man,’ and, in 1938 when aerial photos of farmlands were taken, Mr. Krause decided to go out on his own. He continued as a reporter- community committeeman until 1942 when he was elected to the county committee. Mr. Krause served until the following spring when he accepted employment as county performance supervisor. Mr. Krause later served in Edna, but returned to Fayette County where he spent the majority of his career.

The Columbus Garden Club chose the winners in the La Grange Christmas Home Lighting Contest. The Andy Heselmeyer house on Franklin St. was awarded first prize in the outdoor category and the Wayne Franklin home on the same street received the top award for indoor decorations. The home of Mr. and Mrs. M. J. (Ike) von Minden on College St. was chosen second in the indoor division and Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Taylor Jr.’s home on N. Franklin received third prize. The only entry in the religious category was the attractive nativity scene staged by the Young People’s Society at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church on N. Franklin. After the judging, the Columbus ladies were entertained by Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Schutz at their Frisch Auf! home. Mrs. Schutz was the La Grange Garden Club president.

The Ellinger C of C Hall advertised a Christmas Day dance on Monday, Dec. 25th with music by Leroy Matocha. On Sunday, New Year’s Eve, Ray Baca was to play at the Ellinger C of C, while the Ellinger Combo was booked for the Monday New Year’s Eve dance at the same hall.
