Two men were being held in La Grange in connection with a break-in at the F.R. Hruska Store in Ellinger at about 3 a.m. on Sunday. Ellinger Deputy Sheriff Ed Tobias called Fayette County Sheriff T.J. Flournoy to report that the store’s alarm had gone off. Aided by officers from Bellville, Columbus and Sealy, Fayette County law enforcement officers unsuccessfully searched the area for two subjects who fled on foot. In the meantime, an unattended 1973 Ford registered in Galveston County was towed to La Grange and impounded. At mid-morning, when two males returned to the store looking for their vehicle, they were taken into custody.
Ellinger area deer hunters James Krenek, Robert Smidovec Sr., Ray Minar, Laddie Boone and Rocky Roesler each reported shooting a 4-pointer. Lawrence Korenek and Randy Hoelscher each bagged a 5-pointer, while Dennis Neisner got a 6-pointer.
A 68-year-old hunter was found dead near a buck he had killed in his pasture about three miles northwest of Carmine. Justice of the Peace Harvey Albers of Warrenton ruled that Henry Liebscher’s death was from natural cases.
La Grange High School closed its 1972 football season solidly in the black, according to a report presented to trustees. Revenue from ticket sales for each game during the year was above corresponding revenue in 1971 with increases ranging from $60 to $916. Final figures were not yet in, but Superintendent C.A. Lemmons said the school’s revenue might be as much as $2,000. Also at the school board meeting, building and grounds chairman Vastine Janssen said a study would be made regarding the La Grange Chamber of Commerce’s offer to help air condition the school, but trustees indicated the cost would be prohibitive.
La Grange city councilors went on record as willing to pursue a new approach to solving the city’s stalemated wastewater treatment project. Choosing the most expensive of three options presented by Bovay Engineers of Houston, qualified the city for an Environmental Protection Agency grant for 75% of the project, leaving the city to fund 25%.
A 21-year-old Giddings man, who was killed instantly in a near head-on collision this side of Warda, became Fayette County’s 14th traffic victim of the year. Justice of the Peace Harvey Albers pronounced Victor Ray Urban dead at the scene.
Funeral services were held for: Mrs. Emilie Eckermann, 80, of Industry; Mrs. Hattie Lindemann, 73, of Industry; Mrs. Pauline Gilliam, 92, of La Grange; John Pavlik, 89, the father of State KJT secretary Amos Pavlik of La Grange; John Mynar, 71, of Fayetteville; and Mrs. Mary Petter, 92, of Fayetteville.
Hallettsville’s Sacred Heart Indians used a relentless ground attack to score their first win of the season with a 20-6 victory over the Bishop Forest Rangers. The Indians ground out 420 yards and did not throw a single pass in the game. The Rangers were plagued twice with fumbles deep in Sacred Heart territory, which eventually led to their downfall. Halfback Myron Rehm and fullback Joe Henke were the thorns in the Rangers’ side as they ran for key yards when the Indians needed it most.
The meeting of two pen pals, who began corresponding for over 30 years, became a reality when Mr. and Mrs. Rodney A. Johnson of Puyallup, Washington, came to visit Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Zoch at Winchester. Mrs. Zoch and Mrs. Johnson began their friendship during grade school when the former Ruth Dunk, a seventh grade student, and her classmates in the Serbin Lutheran School, wrote letters that were mailed to a seventhgrade class in Tacoma, Washington. The two girls became pen pals and continued to write and exchange pictures for decades.
Mrs. and Mrs. Emil Freudenberg celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary with an open house at the Hermann Sons Hall in Prairie Valley on Saturday evening, Nov. 18. The enjoyable affair was hosted by their daughter and sonin- law, Mr. and Mrs. Anton Toll of Houston. Emil Freudenberg and Miss Erna Rabe were married Nov. 16, 1927, in the home of the bride’s parents at O’Quinn. They had one daughter, Mrs. Dolores Toll, son-in-law Anton Toll and granddaughter Christina Toll. Three attendants in the wedding, Mrs. and Mrs. Gus Freudenberg and John Freudenberg, were present for the occasion.
Mr. and Mrs. Walter Zoch of Warda observed their 35th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Nov. 19, at the VFW Home in La Grange. Guests enjoyed a noon meal of barbecued pork.
Jane Sulak of La Grange, a senior physical education major with a minor in history at Our Lady of the Lake College in San Antonio, was named to the 1973 edition of Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.
Round Top’s biennial election was scheduled for Tuesday, Dec. 5. The official ballot listed Donald Nagel for reelection as mayor, as well as Dennis Sacks, Wesley Albers and Milton Schlabach running for reelection as aldermen. Curtis Quade was seeking the seat formerly held by Barney Lee Georges who had announced his retirement from council. There was no candidate for city marshal.
