A second attempt to break into DA rash of drug store burglaries occurred over a recent 10-day period in the general area. Burglars broke into Voelkel’s West End Pharmacy in Columbus Tuesday night and got away with about $30 in cash from the register and a number of syringes. However, the narcotics were locked in a safe. The thieves pried open the north door facing the Youens Eye Clinic. In Smithville, vandals broke a window on the north side of Crow’s Pharmacy to gain entry sometime around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday. Only small items were taken. Two burglaries had taken place earlier in Fayette County: Dyer’s Pharmacy in La Grange and W.J. Neese Pharmacy in Carmine. Entrance at Neese’s was gained by prying loose the ends of two protective bars across a rear window and raising the window up with a sharp, heavy instrument. Taken were 500 Valium 500-mg. tranquilizer tablets. After forcing open a locked cabinet, burglars also got away with a quantity of Biphetamine, Dexamyl and Dexedrine capsules.
In other old news, The First National Bank of La Grange moved its operations into a brand spanking new facility on the corner of N. Washington and W. Colorado Streets. The modernistic interior decorated in an off-brown color had a lobby running the full length of the building with management’s offices on the far side. Eight teller cages took up the rest of the space. A large modernistic tapestry made in Spain adorned the wall in back of the tellers. The interior of the bank’s former headquarters was undergoing extensive modernization to house the accounting department, directors and conference rooms, stationery department and lounge. The accounting department was located in the adjoining building, the former location of La Grange Utilities, which the bank also owned.
The time and temperature clock mounted in front of the bank’s former bank headquarters was being remodeled and serviced before it could be installed on the corner of the new structure.
Fayette County commissioners accepted the bid of R. H. Pohl’s City Garage in Carmine of $10,281.44 for two 1973 chassis equipped with dump beds for use in Paul Jaster’s Precinct 2. The auditor was authorized to seek bids for two new dump trucks for Commissioner Henry Dittrich’s Precinct 4. The court also received a petition from citizens seeking paving of Von Minden Road from N. Horton Street to the Nechanitz Road just north of La Grange.
Funeral services were held for: Willie A. Wagner, 77, of Shelby; Adolph E. Friedrich, 78, of Schulenburg; and Selma Frenzel, 79, a native of Wallhalla.
The 1972 Halloween school carnival sponsored by the La Grange Parent-Teacher Association was one of the most successful ever. Approximately 1,450 tickets were sold for the turkey and trimmings dinner, the biggest attendance on record. All the concessions presented by the various grades also enjoyed excellent patronage. The mild weather was given some credit for helping to bring out the jam-packed crowd.
The La Grange Chamber of Commerce float took part in the Bartlett Homecoming celebration on Saturday, Oct. 28. Riding on the float was Miss La Grange – Cindy Petras, who was accompanied by Debbie Fitzpatrick. La Grange Motor Company furnished the transportation.
Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Harbers of Plum celebrated their 50th anniversary with an open house at the Plum Hermann Sons Lodge in Prairie Valley on Sunday afternoon, Oct. 29. Charles Harbers and Olivia Nollkamper were united in marriage by the late Rev. Robert Heise on Oct. 24, 1922, in the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Nollkamper. The couple had resided in Plum all their married life.
Mr. and Mrs. L. Kaderka observed their golden wedding anniversary on Sunday, Oct. 22, by renewing their vows after a Mass at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in La Grange. They later celebrated with family and friends at a dinner in the church cafeteria. Mr. and Mrs. Kaderka were married on Oct. 24, 1922, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Fayetteville with the Rev. John Vanicek officiating.
Mr. and Mrs. M.G. Kurlo, the parents of Mrs. Clarence Peters and Mrs. Raymond Lukas of La Grange, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary Sunday at the American Legion Hall in Giddings. The couple’s other children included Mrs. Henry Hamff of Giddings and a foster son, Billy Teinert of San Antonio. Max Kurlo andAlmaTeinert, who were married at Warda on Oct. 27, 1912, had spent their entire lives in Giddings.
Rita Struve, a 17-year-old La Grange High School senior, was elected La Grange FFA Sweetheart to represent the chapter in various activities during the 1972-73 school year. She was the senior class third vice president, DEA club secretary and a member of the FHA organization, as well as head cheerleader for the La Grange Leopards. Rita was the daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Victor Struve.
Airman Joe G. Bargas Jr., the son of Mr. and Mrs. Joe G. Bargas, was assigned to Sheppard Air Force Base after completing basic training. He was a 1970 graduate of La Grange High School and had attended the University of Texas.
