May 12-19, 1972

A man and wife from Buffalo, Texas, were caught in the act of burglarizing the Gus L. Hruska Store in Ellinger. When Mr. Hruska, who lived nearby, was awakened at 3 a.m. by noise from the direction of his place of business, he called Deputy Sheriff Ed Tobias. The deputy, Mr. Hruska and several neighbors went into the store and the apprehension followed.

Approximately 500 cartons of cigarettes were taken from Migl’s Food Market and Kolar Drive-In Grocery in Flatonia on Tuesday night. Western Auto reported two .22 rifles and shells and a 410 shotgun had been stolen. The office of E.A. Arnim also was entered, but nothing was missing.

During a five-minute free shopping spree in a La Grange grocery store, Mrs. John D. Marburger filled three large shopping carts with items totaling $311.43. Mrs. Marburger’s good fortune resulted from entering her name in a contest sponsored by Morton House, a frozen food company. She was one of 12 winners in the Gulf Coast area.

La Grange High School junior Rox Ann Albrecht was selected to participate in the Student Science Training Program in mathematics and philosophy of mathematics at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Only 40 students from across the U.S. were chosen.

Commencement exercises for the 1972 graduates of La Grange High School were scheduled for 8 p.m. on Wed., May 24 at the public school auditorium. Sandra Altmann was to give the invocation, while Billy Miller was to lead the pledge of allegiance with the welcome address provided by Barbara Naiser. Ray E. Cornes was to present the honor students. Principal H.C. Giese was to introduce the class, followed by school board president Dr. L.D. Boelsche who would present scholarships and academic awards, as well as give seniors their diplomas. Patsy Polasek was to give the farewell address and Gary Minzenmeyer was to pronounce the benediction.

Funeral services were held for: Walter Wagner, 78, of Round Top; Emil Prihoda, 62, of Ellinger; Emil L. Arndt, 71, of Carmine; Miss Elon Baumbach, 29, of Ellinger; and Mrs. Frieda Bergmann, 77, of Warrenton.

Jo Helen Cronenberger, the daughter of Mrs. Gladys Cronenberger of La Grange, earned her doctor of philosophy degree in biophysics from the University of Houston. She was to begin research in September 1972 with Dr. Volker Erdman at the Max-Planck Institute in Berlin, Germany.

Henry C. (Hank) Paine of La Grange, a political science major at Texas A&M University and president of the 1971 class of La Grange High School and yell leader, was traveling to Europe in the summer for further study through the Experience in International Living program.

Debbie Kolek, the daughter of Hwy. Patrolman and Mrs. A.F. Hall of La Grange, was reported to be doing fine after undergoing surgery at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin for the removal of her remaining kidney. She was to remain on dialysis treatments two or three times a week until a suitable kidney could be found for a transplant operation.

The U.S. Office of Management and Budget in Washington released $1.3 million in funds already appropriated by Congress for a 52-county Colorado River basin study, according to Congressman J.J. (Jake) Pickle. He said the State of Texas would be required to (approximately) match the federal spending. The study, to be conducted by the Army Corps of Engineers, was intended to find the best methods for controlling industrial and municipal waste disposal on the Colorado River.

Demolition crews began knocking down the former AMPI milk plant in La Grange to prepare the way for new stores for HEB grocery company and Perry’s.

Marie Wolle of Carmine was named to Who’s Who in American Junior Colleges and received basketball and all sports scholastic awards at Temple Junior College where she was a sophomore.

Mr. and Mrs. Hugo Meyer of Carmine celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with about 150 relatives and friends present. Hugo Meyer and Miss Iva Burns were married April 22, 1922, in Quincy, Illinois. After four years, the couple moved to Houston where Mr. Meyer was a maintenance engineer for Sears Roebuck and Company. The couple moved to Carmine after he retired.

Alvin Zimmerhanzel of Cistern had the misfortune of having an accident that resulted in broken ribs at the Trailer Rider Association celebration last Sunday.

Melanie Brown, a junior at La Grange High School, won second place in the stenographic occupations contest at the 6th National Youth Leadership Conference in Columbus, Ohio. The seven-minute competition consisted of office situation problems, dictation and transcription of letters and memos, and typing of accounts receivable form letters. Her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Steward Brown, flew to Columbus to attend the awards banquet.

The University of Texas no longer required new students to have smallpox vaccinations.
