Texas Governor Congratulates La Grange Little League All-Stars
Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe sent a telegram to the La Grange Little League All-Stars Manager Wayne Fowler and Coach Clement Trlicek. The governor praised the team, offering his sincere best wishes on their big win. An appreciation barbecue honoring the Texas champions was being held at the Round Up Hall on Thursday night. Tickets, a $2.25 donation, were on sale until noon Thursday.
An aerial map showing the proposed boundaries of the land to be acquired by the Lower Colorado River Authority for the Fayette Power Project was on permanent display in the district courtroom of the Fayette County Courthouse in La Grange. It showed the proposed location of the power plant’s first units, the railroad line circling the area and the ash disposal area for Phases I and II. While no one would be present to answer questions, those wishing to do so could contact the LCRA in Austin or Mr. Rhodes of Coates Field Services in La Grange.
The investigation into the weekend burglary at Luck’s Food Store in West Point and the adjoining post office continued. Sheriff T.J. Flournoy said entrance was gained first into the store and then into the post office where a knob and hinges were beaten off a safe. The strong box was ruined but the intruders could not open it. A filing cabinet taken from the post office was found Monday miles away in the Mullins Prairie community. The airmail stamps and envelopes it contained were missing. Mr. and Mrs. Edmond H. Luck, who operated the store, reported five pounds of cheese and a boneless ham were stolen in the break-in.
One of the more novel features at the 47th annual Fayette County Fair would be a tobacco spitting contest. Each contestant would get three spits from behind a line using Beech-Nut tobacco provided by the contest committee. The person registering the farthest distance would be declared the winner. In the case of a tie, there would be a spit-off.
Lincoln and Warda evened things in the Community Baseball playoffs, setting up the third and final games of the semi-finals. Lincoln tripped the Noack Bears with a tworun rally in the bottom of the ninth. Trailing 4-3, Lincoln got a pair of walks and a bunt single by Dr. E.A. Frosch, setting the stage for Wayne Frosch to pound out a tworun single and finally winning the second game, 5-4. Allan Garbs got credit for the win. Kenny Leschber was charged with the loss after relieving Steven Cornell.
Funeral services were held for: Lawrence Bertling, 69, of Flatonia; Mrs. Hulda Wenkebach, 81, of La Grange; Ernest E. Watson, 71, of Rek Hill; Emil Zoch, 87, of Winchester; Willie Plumbeck, 59, of Round Top; Mrs. Minna Krebs, 96, of Industry; Elo W. Balzer, 66, a native of Shaw’s Bend; Mrs. Frances E. Balko, 105, of La Grange; and Mrs. Gaston E. Heffington, 51, of Houston and Fayetteville.
La Grange Independent School District Trustees approved the portion of the 1974-75 budget involving federal funds, some of which were carried over from the prior year. The new budget called for total expenditures of $1,200,060. Trustees also voted to accept the only bid received on one acre of land owned by the school district four miles southeast of La Grange. It sold to the Naiser Brothers for $405.75.
Mrs. Linda Ann Dalchau received her master of education degree from Texas A&M University. A 1966 graduate of La Grange High School, she was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Ephraim of Winchester.
Charles Edward Mayer of La Grange was recognized as an honor student for the spring semester at the School of Engineering at the University of Texas.
Green Thumb crew members finished the brandspanking new general exhibits building at the Fayette County Fairgrounds. Those involved in constructing the 48x100foot project were: Enno Wehrmeister, Otto Schueler, Otto Hartmann, John H. Koenig, W.J. Braun, Willie Pietsch, Bill Meiners, Herbert Mischer, Elton Wolff, Clinton Mayer, Paul Schmidt, John Stahmer, Leo Hartfield, Alfred Andreas and Frank Hartmann.
Giddings Times & News publisher L.M. (Buddy) Preuss III of Giddings bought three Lavaca County newspapers: Moulton Eagle, East Bernard Tribune and Lavaca County Tribune-New Era Herald in Hallettsville. He already owned the Bellville Times and
Yoakum Herald-Times.
Mr. and Mrs. William J. Zuhn of La Grange celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Aug. 25, with a noon meal at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church Parish Hall. William J. Zuhn and Hilma Koepke were married on Oct. 1, 1939, at Trinity Hill Lutheran Church near La Grange. They had two sons, two granddaughters and one grandson.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilhugh Weyand of Ledbetter and Houston observed their 40th wedding anniversary on Aug. 7 in Houston.
Mr. and Mrs.Antone Fleck celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sunday, Aug. 11 at Forest Oaks Baptist Fellowship Hall in Houston. The Flecks were married on Aug. 13, 1914, at West Point where they lived until they moved to Houston in later years.
Fayetteville Public Schools opened for the 197475 term with 124 pupils in the elementary, 37 in junior high and 70 in high school for a total of 231.
Sacred Heart School in La Grange opened with an enrollment of 121 pupils, the same number as on the first day of the prior year.
