After a recent rain, Agricultural Agent Clinton Bippert saw green crops and big smiles everywhere he visited in Fayette County. He said early maturing varieties of milo would be cut in three weeks and the corn crop would mature in early July. Fayette County had only 15 cotton growers, but they had planted 5,000 acres. Bippert said that crop had never looked better.

Although Fayette County Sheriff T.J. Flournoy reported he had nothing special to talk about, he noted some days were busier than others. For example, on May 1, deputies went to Ledbetter to investigate a burglary and theft. The same day, there was district court and officers made a trip to Schulenburg to serve a subpoena. On May 11, one deputy went to Carmine to investigate a burglary and another deputy went to the Cistern dance. Five were jailed that day for the following offenses: DWI, carrying a pistol, disorderly conduct, traffic infraction and being drunk. In May, the sheriff’s office handled 33 prisoners in the jail and collected $3,032.66 in fines for the county.

The La Grange Jaycee Demons and the Austin Senators divided a pair of seveninning ball games at Fair Park on Sunday. The Demons took the opener, 4-1, and the Senators won the next game by the same score. Allen Garbs elbowed a two-hit hill performance in the first go-round as his Demon mates got to Terry Kubech and Mark Cline for 12 base knocks. Garbs aided his own cause with a solo homer over the right field barrier in the second stanza. The Demons plated all of their counters in the first two frames. A walk to Danny Muzny and singles by Dave Zatopek, Billy Miller and Bubba Riehs sent in a pair in the first inning. Muzny’s single and doubles by Knippel and Zatopek scored another after Garbs’s shot in the second.

In a letter to the editor, 15-year-old Janis Roitsch of La Grange lamented the potential loss of her family’s land near Halsted to the LCRACity of Austin power plant project. At Christmas 1973, her parents gave part of that property to Janis’s two sisters, a brother and her. “My parents wanted us to have the land because they love us and want us to appreciate our heritage,” she said. Her dream was to one day build a house and live on the property.

In two Little League thrillers Monday night, the Dodgers nosed out the Cardinals, 4-3, and Round Top-Carmine edged past the Giants, 1-0. The Dodgers collected only three base knocks off Craig Oltmann, one a double by John Cufr, which scored the winning run in the sixth inning. Cufr, pitching for the Dodgers, annexed the hill win on a four-hit effort and fanned 10. Brad Bloomer socked a home run for the Redbirds. Marvin Marburger turned in a no-hit mound performance to shut out the Giants, the latter’s first setback of the season. RT-C itself got only two base knocks off loser Greg Trlicek, one a double by Marburger, who fanned 14 and walked six. Trlicek fanned a dozen and free-passed two.
